I'm beyond livid. I'm thinking of driving around the neighborhood and finding who's blowing these off and calling the police. My dogs are near panic and scared to death. Like someone bought a whole stand tonight and decided to shoot them. Like do all the morons around here have their days mixed up?

I was surprised how few there were last night. My ferals weren't a bit nervous.
But I have a feeling the "100" will be doing some extra huge things tonight. The threat of rain might have kept them reined in last night.
It's going to rain today, so who knows?

(9,538 posts)People get them from Mexico, AZ, or other places they are legal and bring them in here. It's noisy, scary, the dogs and wildlife all go nuts. Last year it looked like a pro show complete with finale; I called more than once, nothing was done. Last night someone started a small brush fire a couple of miles away with fireworks.
The cops rarely do anything about it and even when they try, it gets screwed up Two days ago in LA the cops seized 2 and a half tons of illegal fireworks but it accidentally blew up, injured a bunch of people and damaged several buildings. The lid off the "containment" vehicle was found 2 or 3 blocks away.

I think the cops should ticket the people lighting them off, levy a HEFTY fine.
Then next year there will be a bunch of money in this fund, where those of us who have dog licenses can apply to be reimbursed when you have to medicate our animals because of this crap.
We have 4 dogs. We have a kennel license. We follow the rules.

(34,088 posts)one day i took her in to be groomed at petsmart & they asked if she was on any medication. i told them i had given her half a benadryl that morning and they refused to groom her. i asked why & they told me they won't groom dogs when people give them a tranquilizer before grooming. i was so pissed off--told them about her allergy and this was prescribed to her and they didn't believe me. assholes!
anyway, benadryl can have a calming effect on dogs.
so can milk chocolate (not dark chocolate).
one of my dogs ate half a chocolate cupcake at a party one night (thank you six year old neighbor for leaving your plate on the living room floor). my pooch was terrified of thunder and loud storms and we had a horrible one that night and she was calm as a cuke; she wasn't trembling and freaking out.
i talked to a vet about it a couple days later and they said milk chocolate was a little known secret--it has a calming effect on dogs. after that we would give her a few bites of three musketeers when a storm was coming and it helped a lot.
google benadryl for dogs
one link i found did say this: "Benadryl would be contraindicated in dogs that have had an adverse side effect to Benadryl or any other antihistamine. Benadryl should also be used cautiously in dogs with glaucoma, difficulty urinating due to an enlarged prostate or obstructions at the neck of the bladder, vomiting due to an obstruction at the pylorus (between the stomach and duodenum), hyperthyroid disease, cardiovascular disease and/or high blood pressure (hypertension)."
https://iheartdogs.com/giving-benadryl-to-dogs/
also, during fireworks (back when i lived in a house), i'd blast the tv, blast music, turn all the fans and ac on to try and drown out the sound of my dickhead neighbors shooting off fireworks in the street (in front of my house! one dickhead lived across the street & the other one lived next door. and their dogs would freak out and poop and throw up in their houses but, being dickheads, they did not care.) they also set fireworks off on new yrs eve. ugh.
good luck with your dogs.

As far as the not bathing because of taking tranquilizers I have never heard of that. They actually use that on some dogs to bath and cut their hair. I was an assistant dog groomer for 11 1/2 years so this is knowledgeable territory for me.

(4,487 posts)on the south side of Lansing, Michigan. The laws had been relaxed to the point where everything was completely out of control... and large "artillery shell" fireworks going off even after 2AM in the morning... Our small dog was so terrified, I could not get him to use the bathroom... and this was all before the actual 4th of July.
I am all for patriotism, fireworks, fun is fun... but it was too crazy. We actually called the police to complain, but officers informed us that they could do little about it without actually catching someone in the act. Meanwhile, our Vietnam vet friend down the street was also in PTSD hell with shellshock...
Luckily, the local government changed the laws about this which seemed to quiet things down a lot in subsequent years. Last fall I moved into a house on the far northern edge of town.... Tonight there were some fireworks going until midnight, but not too much and not too loud. I actually went outside to try to view some of them, but I could never see anything...
But eight years ago, it was like living in a war zone. It was like living amidst an artillery barrage... It was like World War I out there...
totally "All Quiet on the Western Front" territory (and it was anything but quiet. The shells going off were of a large and loud variety).

(15,812 posts)The County and City made the sale and use illegal this year, simply because its tinder-dry.
We had one series of fireworks on Thursday night, followed by an angry post on our neighborhood Facebook page. The response from the neighbors was overwhelmingly negative on the use of fireworks this year and its been quiet for the two nights since. I think someone had a chat with their kids.
I do expect we will hear some tonight- maybe not in the neighborhood but certainly from across the river. There are no public displays this year which Ill miss but itll be nice to have a muted evening.
Our dogs arent that bothered by them. The youngest hasnt noticed anything at all. Our other pup sat with us for a bit last year on a hill in Bozeman Montana, watching the fireworks all around. It wasnt his favorite thing ever but he didnt cower or freak out.
I have a big bin of fireworks in my basement, but I wont even open a box of sparklers this year. Its just too dry.
Buckeye_Democrat
(14,858 posts)I didn't even bother to simply walk outside to see them this year.
When I owned a cat years ago, and it was bothered by the loud noise, I had the bright idea to carry it outside so it could see the explosions in the sky that were causing it.
The cat indeed turned her head slightly to look up at the first outwardly-spreading streams of light after I took her outside, and then she immediately buried her claws into my chest!
That's when I rushed back inside, with continuous "ow, ow, ow" uttered by me, until she finally relaxed enough to retract her claws.
It was one of the dumber things I ever did.

(15,292 posts)Before it was just sparklers, but we're close to Ohio where fireworks are legal and people bought the bigger shells there. Despite that, there wasn't much noise outside of municipal fireworks. Last year, though, one nearby home shot off fireworks from before dark until the middle of the night. Luckily for me they were across and down the road making it more annoying than anything else.

(15,224 posts)But why should my right to a quiet evening at home in celebration be superseded by idiots in my neighborhood breaking the law? People have a right to have fun and enjoy themselves but that right ends when their enjoyment impedes others who have the same right to enjoyment. Same with idiots who play loud music all the time. Why should everyone else have to listen to their choice in music? Its common courtesy to think about others.
I see no connection to anti-Asian sentiment in my area because its mostly old white men who are selling the fireworks.

(16,139 posts)we had one dog who hated fireworks, if he was home alone, he would be destructive, but if we stayed with him and sat on the couch with him, he was fine. He took his cues from us...he was a dog we learned a lot from, in terms of how to handle animals. He was challenging and frustrating and having dog companions was made much easier by the lessons we learned from him.
Now we make sure we stay nearby and are calm and attentive. As long as we don't become agitated, the dogs stick close and are calm.
When they have to go out, we take them into the yard and stay next to them while they do their thing and then go back inside and they hang really close.
We must have weird dogs though, because aside from barking by our Pyr mix (who, honestly, barks at everything, from squirrels to leaves), they are good. Small dog trembles at bit until we pull him close next to us, and cats swarm over to be "comforted", which I think is cat code for "why are the dogs getting extra attention, we want love too!".
