there is a series of tweets from miami-herald reporter:
"Emergency court hearing happening now in Miami with survivors of the #SurfsideCondoCollapse asking a judge to halt tonights demolition so that they can go save their pets.
Attorneys representing residents say they have the constitutional right to risk their lives to save their pets. The county is aggressively pushing back, saying that by doing that, its risking not just those pet owners lives, but the lives of rescue workers and the community.
Judge says though the court is sympathetic, that it has limited jurisdiction. The executive branch has been working tirelessly and has made a herculean effort to do everything within their power to make sure pets have been retrieved.
Fact remains
despite those efforts
there is going to be loss of life loss of human life and lives of animals
Judge says he cant step on the toes of the executives who have made the decision to demolish today and second guess their wisdom.
Motion denied.
Some details to add: Miami-Dade County said the building is riddled with explosives set to go off tonight (NOW).
That by letting residents go up to their apartments, it would mean risking the lives of rescue crews by having them recheck the charged explosives.
An attorney representing a survivor mentioned how the area was no longer going to be directly hit by a storm, that maybe because of that, the demolition could be delayed.
That specific point never ended up being addressed by the judge.
The demolition will happen

(6,829 posts)I don't like it but there's no other way.
I'm trying to figure out why you'd evacuate a building without your pets, already knowing half of it literally fell down and killed a shitload of people .
Why would you leave your pet behind in the 1st place?

(19,567 posts)People were panicked and they didn't realize they'd not be back, or that there'd be no rescue for their pets later. Rational minds weren't functioning yet. Also, their pets were equally panicked and just hid, like panicked animals often do.
My Siamese would be burrowed into a deep hole if something like that transpired in her living area. I'd be lucky to see her several hours later. Which these people didn't have.
It hurts my heart to know of their loss.

(19,567 posts)It's unlikely they survived without water before this.
My heart goes out to the pet owners. They've already lost so much, but I can't validate risking human lives in this circumstance either. It was a tragic situation with tragic outcomes.

(7,659 posts)They checked the building several times for family pets, along with leaving food and water on the patios. They didn't find any evidence of any family pets.
When the building went down, perhaps 20 minutes before you created this OP, I started crying. I know it will be safer for the search and rescue teams to continue their job without the dangers of it's instability looming over them. It was still difficult to watch.
