Fauci on masks: wear one in low vaccination areas.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said even people who are fully vaccinated should still "go the extra mile" to ensure protection in areas with low vaccination rates.

"Even as good as they are and highly effective, nothing is 100%," Fauci said of vaccines during an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday morning.

"If you put yourself in an environment in which you have a high level of viral dynamics and a very low level of vaccine, you might want to go the extra step and say: 'When I'm in that area where there's a considerable degree of viral circulation, I might want to go the extra mile to be cautious enough to make sure that I get the extra added level of protection,' Fauci said.

Per Dr. Fauci:
(1) Vaccines are not 100%
(2) People who are vaccinated are still at risk - especially in areas where vaccination is low
(3) You don't have to choose between masks and vaccination (as a few people have suggested recently) - do both.

So, all of you who said you would wear masks when Dr. Fauci told you to . . . he is now suggesting masks as an added later of protection on top of vaccines, especially in low vaccination areas.

My state and city are at 70% vaccinated. I don't wear a mask unless a business expressly tells me so. There's nothing new that Fauci has said that will make me wear a mask. His advice is for the vaccinated in high viral load, low vaccinated sections of the country.

The real solution continues to be mandate that more people get vaccinated. The whole argument of masks vs. no mask is a moot point because masks are not effective at stopping the spread over a long period of time.

And they're out and about in densely packed crowds, especially this weekend! Saw them on the streets and in parking lots while I was driving home today since they were gathering to watch tonight's fireworks. Obviously, I avoid them like the plague - which is pretty much what we're facing now. I still wear my mask when entering a store where there are other people, so I find it mind boggling to see these crowds without a mask in sight...

I am with people that I know are fully vaccinated. Overall, my routine hasn't changed much.
