1. No matter what they do, the Republicans have a bad hand.

This is worse than if the Benghazi consulate had been attacked by a group of Democrats. It will be very hard for the Dems to overplay this. It is very likely that eventually some very bad info is going to come out. Their actions will most likely be driven by the base, which will turn off everyone else.
