Not long after I merged onto I-694 East, where the traffic was steady at 70 MPH (speed limit is 60), I was passed by a Ford F250 flatbed truck doing at least 80 MPH. Mounted on the rear of the truck was a huge US flag, flapping madly in the windy wake of that truck.
As it passed me, I noted that its trailing edge was badly tattered from being damaged by the wind as it flapped.
I suppose the man driving that truck thinks of himself as a patriot and is advertising his patriotism by trailing a tattered US flag behind him and his truck. That sort of patriotism is as tattered as the flag he drags behind him on the freeway. It is a shredded patriotism that comes from no thought or consideration. It is clearly faux patriotism, as promoted by Faux News.
Feh!

(115,976 posts)A few years ago I'm driving along on MN state hwy 50, south of St. Paul and kind of out in the boonies, when I espy ahead of me a pickup truck flying a large US flag from one corner of the bed and a same-size Confederate flag from the other corner. It's too bad there's no way to communicate in words with other vehicles. Or maybe that's a good thing. Because I would have said something like, "WTF is wrong with you?" Dude fell out of the stupid tree and hit every branch on the way down, I guess.

(17,757 posts)Still has his Trump-Pence signs out, and he has been flying a tattered, ragged, bleached-out flag for a year. I have thought about procuring it in the middle of the night and giving it a proper sendoff. In all fairness, and politics aside, the guy is raging, inflamed asshole on his best days; a perfect specimen of a modern Republican.

(21,845 posts)Six months later, those proud flags were tattered and wind-torn.
My workplace flew a flag, and for years it was part of my job to take it down every night when we closed (folding it into a triangle) and to bring it in when rain or stormy wind threatened it. I notice the current management no longer bothers.

(146,350 posts)ISIS wannabees, though, I think. Based on January 6, I don't find them all that fearsome, in the end.
That could change, I suppose, but I think most of our flag wavers are mostly basement-dwelling faux warriors.

(70,639 posts).... justified because their brains are so cooked by Trump/Fox/OAN/internet nut ball crap, generational
stupidity, their own little society's racism/sexism/anti intellectualism, and don't forget their bible based
pastor's bullshit. Leaving out their crystal meth, vodka, and microwave waffle breakfasts.
