While I obviously never bought into the "southern heritage" argument as an argument to defend these statues or the damned flag or anything else brought back in the late 40s and 50s to combat civil rights and desegregation, the song was still a resonant and memorable piece and Helm's performance on drums and vocals stays with you. That song will remain, but the statues need to go to cold storage or museums. Way past due.

This statue was the basis of the Unite the Right mess.

The song paints a picture of a man in the times. That’s how I’ve always taken it.
