JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Hospital officials said the overwhelming majority of the new COVID-19 patients they are seeing -- 98% -- are not vaccinated. Medical experts said the recent rise in cases is because of the Delta variant spreading throughout Northeast Florida.
The growing number of people sick with the virus is contributing to longer wait times at Northeast Florida hospitals, according to health officials.
A Jacksonville mans visit to the Ascension St. Vincents Southside Hospitals emergency room on Tuesday became a nightmare, according to his wife. She said he does not have COVID-19 but the flood of patients force him to wait 26 hours in the ER before he could be admitted.

So Fucking SICK & TIRED of hearing how well Florida did in keeping their state open, while mine, California, had lockdowns and mask requirements.

(31,261 posts)My oldest brother got sick from a non-Covid illness. He was taken to a non-Covid ICU. The regular ICU was totally blocked off, treating only Covid patients. To even get into a regular waiting room, a visitor had to go through a battery of procedures, I saw one guy who looked like a Trumper to me get turned away, a police officer was standing nearby if needed.

(31,261 posts)I do feel for the Doctors and Nurses in the original ICU units (the hospital had a General adult ICU and an adult Cardiac ICU, the staff of both, I believe were then treating Covid patients). They must have gone through hell, and now they are having to treat a lot of people who willingly made a choice to be there by not getting vaccinated.

Given the Los Angeles County stats right now, 99 pct chance they are not vaccinated.
That a pretty safe bet for the doctor to make.

(14,873 posts)The number of hospitalized patients and ER wait times fluctuate frequently, so any individual data points are only a moment-in-time snapshot and do not accurately tell the full story. Like other local facilities have indicated, we have seen a notable increase in hospitalized COVID-19 patients in our facilities, which can lead to longer wait times.
Sheesh. Can't he just say "yes".

(17,659 posts)My wife and I went to one of the major hardware chain stores today and the only masks I saw was on a couple of employees. Knowing that better than half of the people in the crowded store were not vaccinated, everybody but the governor knows what is coming. Meantime DeSantis is selling campaign novelties making fun of the virus. DeSantis' plan is to ignore the virus away.
That is where, in the third largest state, we are. We need to change the state motto to the denial state, because we have more denial than sunshine.

(31,261 posts)The virus is getting more efficient with every big mutation. As long as it has tens of millions of Americans who are making sure that their bodies wont put up a defense, the virus will continue to mutate and become more efficient at infecting people.
My one concern is that one or more mutations will have developed the capacity to defeat the protections that the current spate of vaccines provide.

(90,367 posts)... the population has been vaccinated.
Bottom line the rate of infection is just as high or higher just dealing with a smaller number if the young are excluded seeing their rate of hospitalization is lower.
That's a ... LOT ... of republicans

(31,261 posts)I was at the drug store earlier this week and saw a woman who looked like she should have been vaccinated months ago waiting for a vaccine shot. She was masked, but I suspect only because if she wasnt, the pharmacist would have turned her ass away. So the current dire situation for the unvaccinated seems to finally be registering in some of their skulls.

(31,261 posts)but continue the lies. My bet is that the Fox News talking heads are all vaccinated, yet they openly encourage their viewer to buy into nonsensical conspiracy theories, with the end result being some of those people dying.
When I look at the world, I am really concerned that a new variant of SARS-COV-2 is going to develop in places like Indonesia or Brazil. Both countries have pretty large populations, plenty of poverty and healthcare systems that were over-taxed even before Covid, now they have the Delta variant establishing itself in that volatile mix. Also keep your eyes on what I believe is the Gamma variant (came out of South Africa and has the capacity to evade the immune system), there are a couple of places where the Delta variant and the Gamma variant are circulating among the same populations. Imagine the potential chaos if a variant forms that has characteristics of the two?
