Oh my freaking God! Covid breakthrough cases!!!! AHHHHHHHH!!! Yes. Breakthrough cases. They're as expected as day follows night and night follows day. That's simply how it works. And yes, those who are vaccinated CAN test positive in some cases if exposed. However, your chances of severe illness and death are still vastly lower than the unvaccinated, given current SARS-CoV-2 mutations.
Vaccines aren't silver bullets. They aren't suits of armor. Nor are the force fields. And they don't affect everyone the same way in every possible situation. In short, like most things in life, it's complicated. Vaccines, in combating viral disease, are a complex dance of efficacy, numbers vaccinated, speed of vaccination programs, viral mutations and on and on. Still, the bottom line is, vaccines work. But to ensure they work, we need to get more people vaccinated as soon as possible. Herd immunity. Slowing and stopping the chains of transmission. And not just in the US, but globally.
Now I get controversial.....Make it mandatory in most situations in the US. For college enrollment. For school once it's OK'd for those under 12. For work in lots of situations. For travel on airlines, trains, mass transit, cruise ships, etc. Mandatory. If you come into contact with other humans on a daily basis and don't have a valid medical excuse. Withhold federal funding for states that don't get their shit together. Mandatory. It's no more about freedom than one's "right" to drive intoxicated. It's about everyone's right to life. Good article at Vox on this plus CDC info. So don't freak out. Educate yourself. And push your elected officials to do what's necessary to beat this pathogen.

(29,098 posts)Just because you are vaccinated doesn't mean you can't spread it. You can still be exposed, asymptomatic and believe you are not sick. As a teacher or healthcare worker you can then expose those not vaccinated and especially those under 14 without the shot. I'm very worried about the kids who are being left exposed and very worried about the schools when they reopen.

(19,236 posts)Fauci called the vaccinated dead ends for spread if they were infected.
As far as I've seen, no studies have shown that Delta can or cannot spread in those vaccinated with Pfizer or Moderna.

(29,098 posts)And yes you are right it is less likely but the vaccine is not a magic shield that prevents you from getting the virus or shedding it. As Delta spreads we will be seeing this more frequently which is why it is imperative that we continue to mask up and avoid high spread locations. One child getting covid in a classroom can be a tragedy for many
