(32,634 posts)I'm fully vaccinated and so are most of the people I know. And yet I wear a mask every time I leave my house because this Delta variant is scary.
They need to make a new vaccine for this thing. Maybe even give it a new name. For example call it Covid-21 instead of 19. I don't know, but people need to sit up and take notice. This thing doesn't care if you're vaccinated - if it sees you it, will attack you.
Already vaccinated people are getting sick and dying, and it's not just here in the USA. Take a look at the statistics from Israel, India, Brazil and elsewhere.
We need a new and stronger vaccine, and quickly.

(44,973 posts)That's absurd.
You have to design the vaccine, then go through clinical trials (which will take months). Then FDA approval which also takes months. And what technology you think is going to produce better than what we already have?
We've already used our best current technology with Pfizer and Moderna.

(218 posts)Israel has had 16 deaths in 2 weeks after having 0 deaths in the two weeks before that. The deaths are mostly in unvaccinated people. The delta variant is scary but vaccination still does a great job of preventing hospitalization and death

(32,634 posts)They are way higher than the US and Europe. Why are vaccinated people even getting the virus? Why are there any fatalities?

(218 posts)Vaccines are not 100% effective, heck some like the flu vaccine have only around 50% efficacy. The goal is to prevent serious illness and death. Even the most successful of vaccines will have breakthrough cases and deaths. This is actually a very very good vaccine, even against delta.

(44,973 posts)I think in most recent years it has been lower than that.

(218 posts)For. the flu vaccine.. As in it prevents flu 40-60 percent of the time. But even if you get the flu after being vaccinated it should be a mild case

They really are pretty lousy at predicting what strains will be rolling around, and it could only impact the severity if the strain is close to the prediction, since the reason for the really low numbers most years is because they aren't even close to the correct strain.
Take the MMR vaccine, It is 97 percent effective against measles and 88 percent against mumps. But the 12 people in 100 who would still get mumps would most likely get a very mild or asymptomatic case

(18,868 posts)Even here in KCMO we have a ton of people who don't plan to ever get vaccinated. They have a multitude of excuses.
I just don't really care any more. Nothing is going to get through to them except getting seriously sick or having a close family member or friend die.
