The new round of election legislation, in other words, might only disenfranchise small numbers of people, depending on which bills make it into law and how theyre applied. But they appear to be part of a broader effort to discredit elections won by Democrats, to place a thumb on the electoral scales in favor of Republicans, and to vindicate Trumps lie that he, not Biden, won the 2020 election. And, in this closely divided state, even a small number of disenfranchised voters could swing an election.

(4,361 posts)If Republicans try to use a "citizen initiative" to pass their fascist voting proposals into law (a citizen's initiative would normally go to the ballot, but the state Constitution allows the legislature to pass it directly into law without the governor being able to veto it), Democrats can launch a counter-initiative to nullify the law with only 200,000 signatures, which would go to the voters, who would surely vote to nullify the GQP's fascist power grab. The original initiative in support of the suppression would require more than 300k signatures.
(I was glad to learn of that recently, as I thought that those opposed to the fascist GOP's anti-voter coup would have no recourse if they managed to do it. In any case, it is dirty politics altogether, and a subversion of the intent of citizen's initiatives provisions in the state constitution.... It is reminiscent of their maneuver passing a right-to-work law in this state: by adding an appropriation to the bill, they made it impossible for that law to be over-turned by a citizen's initiative.)
The Republicans in the state of Michigan might not be quite as batshit-crazy as those elsewhere, but they are totally evil in being able to manipulate the laws to their advantage in ways which were never intended. I think the whole lot of them should be shot--
