The wife of my nephew started blathering about how "B. Hussein Obama" was not even a citizen. I let her run for awhile and started (I swear) a very polite conversation.

(He wasn't born in the US)
Yes, Hawaii is a state. They became a state in 1959 and Barack Obama was born in 1961.

(But he was really born in Kenya)
Where does it say you have to be born on US soil? John McCain was born in Panama.

(But his Dad is Kenyan)
Where does it say both parents have to be American citizens? His mother is a white woman from Kansas.

(But he isn't a real Christian - he's Muslim)
I don't understand. Are you saying only Christians are allowed to be American?

At this she stomped off screaming bloody hell, dragged poor husband (my nephew) out of the shower and buried herself in her bedroom for the next 2 days with a "headache".

I asked if I need to move to a hotel for the night. He said no. "She gets like this sometimes". I was leaving the next day anyway. She's not spoken to me since. Shame is my guess.

Anecdotal, but it is a perfect example of your comment.

To hell with Manchin. His "bipartisan" crap is to just cover his ass with voters in WVa. There is nothing bipartisan with the Rethugs. With them it's our way or the highway. We have to start taking off the gloves and do what's right for America!

But as a regressive abettor of fascist-plutocracy. Manchin ain’t gonna change -- except, maybe, to come out of the closet and join the Republican Party. He’s useless baggage to Biden and the Democrats, as is Sinema. Biden’s Administration is maintaining a level of cordiality with these 2 characters until 2022. If the 2022 mid-terms give the President the Senate and House he needs -- without playing nice with Manchin and Sinema -- they’ll be cut loose to drown in a pool of their own insignificance.

But if the mid-terms strengthen the political power of dyspeptic fascism in the Federal government, Biden might just as well pass whatever EO’s he can to complicate things for the Republicans -- and prepare to retire to a quiet and well deserved restful old age in Delaware in 2024. (Assuming, of course, that the Fascisti Brown Shirts allow him to do so.)

Two possible pathways to the future:
1. The Dems lose seats in the Senate and House in 2022, and America dies, and is replaced by a state ruled by the fascist rich
2. The Dems gain seats in the Senate and House in 2022, America gets back on the path to restoration of economic and political rights, Biden becomes the new FDR, and Kamala Harris becomes, in 2024 the first ever woman of color to be elected President.

I think their time has actually run out, though. Oh, they have a hold on their Senate seats through the end of their terms. But after that they will be cast off into the winds. The Fascists* won’t want them and the Dems have enough sense (I have to give them at least that much sense) to kick them to the curb.

*Meaning, of course, the GOP.

I don't see how it will be possible. Unless, something miraculous happens regarding nationalizing Presidential and Congressional elections and getting rid of the Electoral College.. which would involve significant majority in House and Senate to put this into effect vis a vis Constitutional Amendments and so on.

I don't see the path forward without a significant majority right now, which we don't have. Is it possible for it become so in 2022?

Can't remember how many seats in the Senate are "flippable" in our favor, but it still doesn't add up to 2/3 rds majority if memory serves last I checked.

If we are facing voter suppression on a super-massive scale, the likes not seen in my life time (and it's been bad for a long time). how do we get a Kamala Harris as President considering the landscape as it is shaping up currently?

I used to attend two work meetings a year where several were rightwingers, and there were a couple who would regularly argue with me. It was generally kinda fun for us, but there were also a couple hardcore rightists who weren't particularly nice. Yet some of the non-political people always asked ME to stop the political discussions.

I just said, "pay attention - I don't start it. I'm just not gonna stand here and let lies go unchallenged. If you don't want political discussions, tell them to either stop lying or talk about something else."

They start it, but the liberal gets blamed for arguing.

I overhear them at the Y. Usually don't say anything because I don't want to waste time.

I asked a few why they couldn't even take a break from it long enough to go to the gym, and they really had no answer. It's an addiction. There are more than a few who seemed to literally show symptoms similar to drug withdrawal if there wasn't a tv around with the Fox "news" Sewer on it.

They should just take ‘em all out and shoot them...” I’m a dem of course but at the time was in love with his daughter so I decided to strategically keep my shut and approach the situation like an anthropologist observing and noting. So that what’s observable and notable now is a level of hypocrisy stunning to behold in an extreme right utterly immoral and shameless.
