...but still thinks he's better informed and more knowledgable than Dr. Fauci.

And there's a pattern here. From MSNBC on March 19:

Whenever Dr. Anthony Fauci is scheduled to appear at a Senate hearing, everyone knows just what to expect: Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), a former ophthalmologist, will pretend that he's more credible on the subject of infectious diseases than the nation's premier epidemiologist.

Take yesterday, for example. The Washington Post reported:

At a Senate hearing, Paul pressed Fauci on health experts' continued recommendation of masks even for people who have contracted the virus or who have been vaccinated. Paul repeatedly suggested wearing masks in those cases was "theater" — pointing specifically to Fauci wearing masks even though he has been vaccinated.

Fauci did his best to be patient with the oft-confused Republican senator, but the "theater" reference -- Paul also accused Fauci of "parading around in two masks for show" -- clearly annoyed the qualified expert.

"Here we go again with 'the theater,'" Fauci said, adding, "Let me just state, for the record, that masks are not theater. Masks are protective."

Putting this plainly, he's pandering to his base. While everybody's health and safety are at stake.

then my family and I are the greatest theatrical troupe that's ever lived.

Apparently Paul has grandchildren and older members of his family who he cares absolutely nothing about. That's his extremely selfish prerogative, which is an inherent characteristic of republicans, and he's perfectly entitled to his extremely selfish choice.

I believe he'll be a rather lonely soul, though, since most people do care about others in their family circle.

but it's pretty obvious he regards diving back into virology with more than a little horror, or he might know what virology research labs actually do.

And Rando, they don't try to grow viruses in human beings, they try to grow them on human tissue cultures. BIG difference.

I'm not going to call him a dunce because he isn't one. However, if his blind spots are obvious to a broken down retired nurse in East Bumfuck NM, he's in trouble and needs to rectify that.

Wed Jul 21, 2021, 07:32 AM
Jul 2021

I'm not a scientist of any kind -- just an old retired guy who spends some time on the rightwing propaganda sites trying to keep track of the latest lies, bullshit, conspiracies, loons, wackadoodles, and other Republicans.

As best I can figure a "gain of function" is a term that means a virus or other organism can be modified to add a "function" to its current functions. In the hearing it is clear that Paul is citing a "scientific study" by another halfwit who claims the Chinese added functions to the COVID virus to make it more lethal --or some shit horseshit.

It appears that this "gain of function" conspiracy is really big among the aforementioned loons, wackadoodles, and other Republicans.

While reading an article about COVID on PJMedia (a hardcore rightwing propaganda site), I ran across this comment by someone with the screen name "Meritocrat". He/she must have read the same nonsense that Paul is referring to -- note that "Meritocrat" lays the blame for the COVID virus at the feet of Univ of North Carolina and, of course, Obama.

We know that is was engineered in a gain-of-function study in 2014 right here in the US, at the UNC Chapel Hill under the Obama administration. This, and its characteristics, is known by many if not MOST medical experts, but they are not the ones you are allowed to read about in MSM.

These people are beyond nutty.
