https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/woman-dies-in-fall-in-colombia-after-mishearing-bungee-jump-instructor/ar-AAMrHGO?ocid=msedgntpA woman fell to her death earlier this week after she misheard her bungee jump instructor.
The incident occurred Sunday in Amaga, a town in northern Colombia, when Yecenia Morales, 25, was waiting for her chance to leap from a viaduct. She misheard the instructor who had told her boyfriend to jump and stepped off the platform before her bungee cord was attached and plummeted 150 feet.
She was pronounced dead at the scene and may have suffered a heart attack midair, according to The Mirror.
She got confused. The signal was for the boyfriend to jump because he was already attached to the security equipment, Fredonia mayor Gustavo Guzmán told El Tiempo. They had only put the harness on her so she got confused and rushed.

(30,817 posts)I wonder when she realized it, since the first part of bungee jumping is a free fall and then you bounce back upward (I assume - I would never go near one so have no actual idea what it's like).

(12,429 posts)it's a lot like parachuting, the free fall is exhilarating, until the chute opens and yanks you upwards, just like bungee jumping.

(12,592 posts)That's using the Free Fall Calculator and estimating the woman's weight to be 120 lbs.
Given the state of mind of someone who is about to jump for the first time, I doubt she had any concious thought about the bungee not working as it should.
In addition to the young lady, I feel sorry for her boyfriend, who has to live with encouraging her to try bungee jumping because, "It'll be fun."

(30,817 posts)That's what I'd like to think.
But it seems odd then that they think she may have had a heart attack, unless the terror of falling, in general, caused that. That would be me, for sure, but odd in a young woman.

(54,065 posts)Given the topic of this thread, I was worried about what I was watching when I clicked on that video. As soon as that girl shouted out her evolving relationship status, I felt amazing sense of relief that I wasn't watching something grim

(12,592 posts)It took a long time to decide whether to post the video, because it seems to make light of something very serious. That was not my intention. I was surprised, however, to find several "I'm breaking up with you!" videos.

(54,065 posts)Bungee jumping is essentially a safe activity. It's fun and it plays with our adrenaline, just like roller coasters or water slides. There's the occasional accident in each of those recreations, which is heartbreaking, the freak accidents happen during all sorts of mundane activities as well.
I don't think anyone will think you are making light of this poor person's impulsive and tragic mistake. I think basic safety precautions ought to be required whenever people do this. And they probably are.

(30,817 posts)Although nobody should bungee jump because somebody else insisted. Imagine the survivor's guilt if something happens.

(38,326 posts)When I went bungee jumping it seemed like an eternity before I decided to go over the rail. I was checking everything over and over again for myself to the point I was probably irritating the jump master who was beginning to think I'd be a non-jumper.
But I did jump, and it was a blast.
Supervising bungee jumping is not a job I'd want, which is curious because I've had other jobs like blood banking where any mistake or miscommunication can kill people.
This is a very sad story.

Felt like I waited forever to go, but it was probably 3 seconds.
But, it was cool!!

(54,065 posts)I think in that other case from a couple years ago, a friend behind the girl gave her friend a little push while clowning behind her. The video was ambiguous and the culpable girl immediately denied giving the push, said she was "reaching out" to grab her.
It's such an easy and successful business to set up. It really needs to be subject to stricter oversight and safety protocols., Like maybe (1) have a locked gate that isn't opened until the jumper is securely hitched up or (2) don't allow non-crew workers to crowd up behind the jumper.
Bungee jumping is actually very safe, being based on pure science, and people only get hurt when they ignore protocols

(63,221 posts)That poor woman! As someone who is terrified of heights and falling, that would be one of my biggest nightmares. I don't even want to think about this happening. It's so disturbing. May she rest in peace.
