It looks like actress and TV personality Valerie Bertinelli isn't a fan of the "Slowhand."
Sharing the recent story of guitar icon Eric Clapton's stance on vaccine requirements at concerts, Bertinelli shared a photo of herself, Clapton, and late ex-husband Eddie Van Halen -- pointedly captioning the post, "Once a d***, always a d***."

The fat shaming in many of the replies to her is disgusting.

(11,611 posts)I suspect it's Magat's trying to bully her because they don't like her political views. She has a thick skin about it. I'm going to have to catch her show on the Food Network.

Origin
In late 2020, music legends Van Morrison and Eric Clapton announced they had collaborated on a new a single, to be released on Dec. 4. They announced the profits were going to Morrisons Lockdown Financial Hardship Fund, a philanthropic project to support musicians whose livelihoods have been harmed by a series of lockdowns in the U.K., designed to combat the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
In September, Morrison caused controversy by releasing three songs whose lyrics condemned government officials as fascist bullies, and claimed restrictions on travel, socializing, and commercial activity were designed to enslave the public. On that basis, several observers predicted his forthcoming collaboration with Clapton would contain similar lyrics, and the song was widely described as being anti-lockdown.
This predicted foray into political commentary by Clapton prompted some online observers to highlight another infamous piece of social and political commentary from Claptons past the obscenely racist rant he delivered, onstage, in August 1976.
Actor and online activist Jameela Jamil posted a screenshot that appeared to contain a transcript of remarks by Clapton, excerpted below. (The quotations widely attributed to Clapton contain racial slurs that some readers might find particularly offensive):
Do we have any foreigners in the audience tonight? If so, please put up your hands So where are you? Well wherever you all are, I think you should all just leave. Not just leave the hall, leave our country I dont want you here, in the room or in my country. Listen to me, man! I think we should send them all back. Stop Britain from becoming a black colony. Get the foreigners out. Get the wogs out. Get the coons out. Keep Britain white

(5,670 posts)wrote a very interesting autobiography. Clapton is described as having always been extremely insecure and jealous. As Eric and Van Morrison prove, you can be both a genius and an asshole.

(720 posts)I've just never gotten it. Terrible songwriter, can't hold a candle to the true genius guitarist of the time, Jimi Hendrix, and can't even shred as hard as contemporary countrymen (and former Yardbirds) like Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. Eddie Van Halen? Eric Clepton doesn't belong in the same room as Eddie.

(29,149 posts)I agree with you that his songwriting is no great shakes, and there are guitarists who came just in his wake who eclipsed his talent (Hendrix is in a different class, and I'd rather listen to Page than Clapton, though I'm not as sold on Beck). But you could barely field a basketball team with the folks who "can't hold a candle to Hendrix" doesn't apply to, so that's not saying much.
I think his work with Cream and Derek and the Dominos has some great stuff, but most of his solo stuff is pretty dull, imo.
Part of it is just that he got there first, and elevated the instrument, but in doing so he inspired a whole bunch of guitarists who wanted to be rock gods. And many of them approached (and a few surpassed) his technical ability, and some were able to combine that ability with a creativity and originality that he just couldn't match (like Hendrix, Page, and, say, Mark Knopfler).

(18,497 posts)I've always thought Clapton was nasty self important and Eddie was an astonishingly everyday guy for someone who was possibly the G.O.A.T. when it came to the guitar.
But what's happening?
Why was Clapton specifically an asshole at that moment?
