I guess I missed this. I just saw an article that reported when Officer Fanone was on CNN (cant find video) he said that the FOP would not make a statement supporting the officers defending the Capital or condemning the attack.
They have been completely silent compared to other statements supporting other officers in the line of duty.
I have come to believe that white nationalists have infiltrated and are leaders in many areas of law enforcement agencies and the military, something reformed nationalists have stated.
Is this what is going on here? What can be done to get them out?

Don't get me wrong, some put out some shitty "both sides" statements ("we understand the frustration..." ) and at least leader blamed antifa on his own feed. But it's not like there's been radio silence.

(972 posts)That makes me feel a little better but knowing (or believing) that white nationalists have entered law enforcement and the military in great numbers really concerns me.
Im going to have to search for the interview I saw of a reformed WN talking about that.

(22,329 posts)active white supremacists have infiltrated law enforcement and the military. How could they not? They're white supremacist institutions.

(7,538 posts)As for weeding out those for whatever reason not fit to carry a badge, qualified immunity should be replaced with qualified liability and a mandatory insurance requirement. Insurance companies should be able to sort out those that cost more to employ in short order.

(972 posts)Some people have also said the cost of settlements of lawsuits is passed on to residents of the cities served by those police in the form of increased taxes. That should stop.
If both these changes were implemented those cops would be fired because although morality doesnt always talk, but money does!

(1,606 posts)This is happening with many of our once-trusted institutions. Rot has set in.
The time is long past for active citizenship--sleuthing and policing the individuals who control and operate within groups such as this and exposing the vermin within. To begin, examine their private life--examine and cull information from their social media presence, associations, and associates.
We cannot repose in a sense of false security an assume that the organizations themselves or Justice Department or any other part of federal or state government will ensure that upstanding principles and ethics prevail.
Active citizenship requires that we police our own. How the citizenry does this in a deliberate and quasi-organized manner--and to what recourse--remain open questions. or We need an organization with the resources and outreach to cast a wide net on this--something like CREW but national in scope.

(23,097 posts)It's usually them that refuses to investigate anything because blue/white lives matter more than civilians. There were a lot of cops in the crowd, but they are right wingers and haters before they are officers of the law. Cops (especially the union) are a big part of the right wing and the problems with America.
These guys today were not the FOP kind of guys, they are people that actually care about their mission to protect others and aren't just there to protect whiteleys privilege and their chosen, representative, asshole - TFG

(135,830 posts)The National FOPs position on the January 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol is contained in a statement released even as the lawlessness continued. Those who participated in the assaults, looting, and trespassing must be arrested and held to account.
We continue to offer our support, gratitude, and love to our brothers and sisters in law enforcement who successfully fought off the rioters, and we will be with them as they grieve and recover, however long that may take.

(2,596 posts)Most police forces do require at least some post-secondary level higher education, but that can be as minimal as a few semesters in a community college (which I am not sneering at by many means). I think in many working class communities in more rural areas of the country (or in the urban rust belt), the proliferation of Fox "News"-think for the past 30 years has truly and fully mal-programmed peoples' brains. And, and course, it isn't just in rural areas. There are certain people who gravitate to occupations in the law enforcement area and the military who seek not so much to serve the country/community as they do to bolster their own sense of power. I don't lump all law enforcement and military personnel into this group. There are bad actors in every sector of the population. But there are enough in the areas of the military and law enforcement that the need to populate those forces with enough to staff their needs to the extent that it outstrips those forces' capabilities to screen out those who are psychologically unfit (and sometimes outright dangerously psychologically damaged or have been steeped in autocratic or theocratic thinking their entire lives). I don't know what there is to do about it, frankly. But it seems clear to me that the plutocrats of this country want it that way and they'll pay as much as they must to keep fueling it.
