TFG's endorsement proves irrelevant in Texas special election

Yesterday was Election Day in Texas' 6th congressional district, where there was a race that "tested the power" of Donald Trump's endorsement. It was a test the former president failed.

Republican Jake Ellzey of Texas won a U.S. House seat on Tuesday night over rival backed by Donald Trump, dealing the former president a defeat in a test of his endorsement power since leaving office. Ellzey's come-from-behind victory over Republican Susan Wright, the widow of the late Rep. Ron Wright, in a special congressional election runoff near Dallas is likely to be celebrated by Trump antagonists who have warned against his continued hold on the GOP.

When the late Rep. Ron Wright (R-Texas) passed away, and his widow announced her candidacy, it was widely assumed that Susan Wright would be elected. When she picked up Donald Trump's support, her odds seemed to improve even more.

But Jake Ellzey, a GOP state legislator ahead of his congressional campaign, ran a strong race, and though there wasn't much polling, locals agreed that Wright's advantage was slipping in the contest's closing weeks.

Trump's rough day hints at limits of his power over GOP

WASHINGTON — For someone his political party still can’t quit, Donald Trump sure had a rough day on Tuesday.

The House’s Jan. 6 committee heard testimony from the Capitol police who fought with rioters on that day, with excommunicated Republican Reps. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., and Adam Kinzinger, R-Il., taking starring roles on the committee.

-snip-

Then Trump’s endorsed candidate in Texas' 6th Congressional District — Republican Susan Wright — lost to fellow Republican Jake Ellzey, demonstrating the limits to a Trump endorsement, even in a low-turnout runoff. (George P. Bush, you can breathe a sigh of relief.)

And as of publication time, Trump hadn’t commented on that setback, either.

'Donald Trump Bled Tonight in Texas:' Reaction As Trump Pick Defeated in House Runoff

Donald Trump's power as a GOP kingmaker has suffered a blow after voters chose Republican Jake Ellzey over the former president's pick for a vacant seat in Congress, sparking claims that he is "not bulletproof."

According to the Associated Press, Ellzey took 53 percent of the vote, six points more than Trump-backed candidate Susan Wright in the special election runoff for the Texas 6th congressional district on Tuesday.

The AP reported that Ellzey told supporters after his victory: "One of the things that we've seen from this campaign is a positive outlook, a Reagan Republican outlook, for the future of our country is what the people of the 6th district really really want."

Susan Wright—the widow of the seat's previous holder Rep. Ron Wright, who died with COVID-19 in February—had been endorsed by Trump and his super-PAC.

Donald Trump's Texas Endorsement Failure Is Bad Omen for Virginia GOP's Glenn Youngkin

Susan Wright's defeat in Texas has thrown into question the power of Donald Trump's backing—an ominous sign for others he has supported with post-presidency endorsements.

Wright, the widow of the late Rep. Ron Wright, was defeated by GOP rival Jake Ellzey in a special congressional election runoff—despite Trump having backed Wright early and recording a robocall in a bid to boost her closer to election day.

The early failure of a Trump-backed candidate sounds a gloomy note for others he has endorsed in upcoming races. And next of those up for election is Glenn Youngkin, the GOP gubernatorial candidate in Virginia.

Youngkin is running against Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe—who formerly served as governor from 2014 to 2018 and has in turn been endorsed by President Joe Biden—with incumbent Gov. Ralph Northam, also a Democrat, unable to run due to term limits.

I'm not going to take Orange Julius' endorsement of some GOP/Q Anon candidate as a sign of upcoming defeat until there are at least several more races where the results go south for some little Republican trying to cast himself/herself as Donnie's best boy or Donnie's best girl.

Hoping to have more reasons for Schadenfreude but I'm not ready to lay in the supplies for the celebrations quite yet.
