1. Every time I hear it at a medal ceremony I'm struck by how much less awful it is without lyrics.

It's a terrible, terrible song. I switch the channel for a few minutes when a sports broadcast airs the pregame one.

Also, our flag sucks major ass. Ugly. Tacky.

For me, the medal would be the melting-inducer. A tangible reminder of, at one particular moment, being the very best in the world at something.

that the lyrics were written when the US was on the DEFENCE? (War of 1812)

Totally agreed about the flag though. It's a lazy, gaudy design. There are so many flags that are so much better. My favorites are Nepal, Wales, and Kenya. I WOULD rank Brazil (my mom's home country) because I love the design but I think "Order and Progress" sounds fascist.
