Why does Mitch feel free to go against Trump now?

Suddenly and very publicly Mitch McConnell has reclaimed his agency as a politician due to his infrastructure stance this week.

Why now?

He sees that Trump will soon be politically ineffectual because he knows Trump will be exposed by the Jan. 6th investigation to have been complicit in planning and prolonging that day's events.

McConnell already knows that much of what we have envisioned (financing, directing, planning, and holding back reinforcements) is true and that it will undoubtedly come to light.

One of his priorities at this point is to get as far away from Trump as he can before the storms descend upon him.

Mitch's reactions make me fairly certain that Trump will soon be exposed as a liar, fraud, and traitor.

(The loss of his Texas candidate was another sign of hi weakening.

But Trump has always been a liar and a fraud. Will any of his followers be swayed as new revelations emerge? He still has lots of enablers in Congress and in State Houses.

... therefore Chump's blackmail attempts are useless. That's my guess.

6. Trump warned Senate Republicans not to support the bi-partisan infrastructure bill.

I believe McConnell decided to assert his authority over the Senate Republicans, so he gave permission to support the bill, which he also voted for.
Nobody messes with McConnell when it comes to telling his people how to vote.
Besides, this is a wildly popular bill that the nation needed. Best to be in on the side of taking credit for saving our crumbling infrastructure.
It also gave Democrats the false impression that other pending legislation could get bi-partisan support.
And we know that's not going to happen.
He also correctly perceived Trump's weakness and potential criminal liability.
So, it was a win-win for McConnell.

7. I think the Republicans have internal polling revealing the weakness of their positioning.

They have no policies, no governing agenda, no integrity.

People get tired of the "just say no" to everything obstinance.
