"Can we have two golds?"
This is the best moment of the Olympics. Barshim and Tamberi were tied after both clearing 2.37 meters and missing 3 times at 2.39.
They were offered a jump-off to decide the winner.
They decline so that they both could win Gold.

(65,013 posts)That's a full 8cm below the world record, but there have been whispers about Sotomayor & steroids for over 25 years.
This is pretty darn close to the best ever, unaided by biochemical engineering.
Double gold is a cool idea!
Good for both of them!
I was a high jumper, so this event is close to my heart.

(23,975 posts)In the rare past instances of ties for gold, IIRC, they do not award a silver and the next closest score/ point total/ height etc gets a bronze. I wish they would award a silver in these rare cases - let one more person experience the "thrill of victory."
I wonder - do they make a few "spare" gold medals for these rare occurences? What happens if there is a tie for silver or bronze?

(101,311 posts)eg a relay team that has different members in heats and finals - while the members that compete in the final get their medals on the podium, any in the heats are given a medal too.
That raises the question of what happens at the end of the games to unused spares - melted down? Put in a museum? Put in the private collection of the official in charge?

(3,491 posts)are allowed up to 6 members. With 2 or 3 preliminary rounds needed to determine the 8 teams who compete in the finals, the other two can be used to keep the four who run in the finals as fresh as possible. When a team wins a medal, all those who participated, regardless of what round they ran in, receive a medal.

(2,958 posts)I had no idea this was an option. Akin to a baseball game ending in a tie after nine innings.
But I'm OK with it. Should be interesting to read the discussions that will take place within the sport.
