that because one is vaccinated - that they won't get violently sick, won't go to the hospital and won't die.
That is in some way - comforting - BUT - what do we know about lingering and long term effects of this 'delta variant'?
I consider myself in the high risk group for Covid. I'll be 73 y/o by the end of this month with some other underlying conditions.
If I get a case of this now - what other effects might it have on my body that they really don't have any valid info on right now?
This is the reason why I've never let up with all the precautions taken to not get Covid in the first place, (i.e., masking; gloving; wearing eye protection; social distancing; washing hands; sanitizing; getting vaccinated; etc).
Last year was one hell of a year. We had to do all that without the aid of a vaccine. This time it's different. It's not Covid that could kill us - but all of the irresponsible people that didn't get vaccinated and those that refuse to wear masks.
They could kill me now.

(3,739 posts)want to contract the virus either. Yes, being vaccinated will keep me from getting deathly ill, but who knows what long term effects it could have on my body. I am furious with stupid, bratty anti vaxxers.

(67,108 posts)vaccine was available. Now, there is the Columbia variant in parts of the US, I guess Miami initially. Yes, I think it's best to be very overly cautious. I'm amazed at how many still seem to take no precautions, and who knows if they're even vaccinated.

(1,850 posts)Even if it's a small number, it's a possible outcome we don't want.
And those who claim only a small number get breakthrough or long-term or actually die from covid infection compared with the number of cases are missing the point.
Any deaths or long haul covid are too many. I'm not willing to risk getting a breakthrough case, or spreading it to others. I've continued to wear a mask since being fully vaccinated in April.
I hope you and everyone realizes how important it is to wear a mask to stay safe.

(15,607 posts)Bottom line, vaccinated people are at extremely low risk (.001) of severe illness or death from a delta breakthrough infection. That should be what is foregrounded and highlighted, because that is the most important conclusion from the current data.
Of course one should maximize their protective measures and minimize their risks as much as possible.
Unfortunately, the MSMs priority is to tickle the amygdalas of their viewers for ratings/clicks.

(15,607 posts)I will continue to take precautions until there is enough scientific data to convince me otherwise.

(46,042 posts)Still masking, distancing, etc. And waiting for a booster. Id like to slap all the covidiots.

(8,291 posts)There are fully vaccinated who cannot be protected fromm the vaccine. Which is why mandatory vaccines can be so helpful and save many lives of even vaccinated people.

(21,449 posts)Ever since my cataract surgery, I don't need glasses except sometimes for reading. I put them on before entering stores so I can read labels and leave them on so I don't have to put my hands near my eyes after handling items. They are not strong enough to be a problem if I leave them on.
But eyeglasses only give frontal protection. To be fully protected would require goggles, which is a bit extreme in public. I have considered getting safety glasses or sports glasses with side shields. Less conspicuous, but still not complete protection.
I wonder, too, how necessary eye protection is. If someone coughs or sneezes in my face, the virus might get in my eyes. But, just walking through a store - I'm not sure how risky that is for viral entry via the eyes.

(26,071 posts)Or, sportsglasses at Target Optical -- wrap around also, clear lenses.
I wear glasses, and I'm not worried about it. We are fine in stores wearing them.

(1,850 posts)As I'm planning to fly in the coming weeks I decided I need to wear eye protection. I also wear glasses, my 2 pairs are curved differently so I may find something to fit over one pair. If not I'll wear the goggles, carry the eyeglasses, and be legally blind for several hours.
I work at a sporting goods store, and we sell bigger and smaller swimming goggle's, as well as protective sports glasses. I will try some on when I'm there on Tuesday.
With regard to just going into the store with my mask and glasses, I hadn't thought about wearing goggles for that, but it might not be a bad idea if we end up in a crowd or a closed space.
wnylib
(21,449 posts)to wear over glasses. They are made as protection for some occupations. Some seal snugly around the edges for health care workers. It's also possible to order prescription safety and sports glasses that have side shields and even top shields. But they don't seal around the eyes unless they are swimming goggles.
The questions are, I guess, whether eye protection is necessary and if partial protection is enough in every day life situations.

(1,850 posts)Because it's close quarters, despite any benefits of good air circulation.
Prolonged and closer contact at the terminal and especially the plane makes me want to have something for my eyes. Planned for a good quality mask and now planning to get eye protection. Nervous because of the Delta surge, and I don't like to fly in general. It's about 2 hours on board, non stop.
Thanks for the suggestions.
BTW Heading to NYC where I was born and raised to celebrate my 60th birthday. Home.

(25,246 posts)you might use if you were using a power tool (i.e., saw, sander, drill, etc). I bought the ones that provide protection from the side as well.
You want to protect against any droplets going into the eyes. These work well.
I've seen a number of people wearing face shields as well. They usually provide cover around the sides of your face because they curve around the forehead.
I do this just for that extra measure of safety.

But you might look into fishing shades. I have them for on the boat. They wrap around your eyes. The intent is to not allow any sunlight or glare off the water, even indirect, to to your eyes. They fit close to the face even touching at the top and bottom. Plus they look cool.
I have Costa Harpoons.
Plus they will prevent cataracts. Ive spent a lifetime in the Florida Sun and have light blue eyes yet no sigh of cataracts as of last April. Im 55.

Serious stuff, and experts still don't know much about Long Covid.

(21,449 posts)to see it, but I think there will be an increase in a few decades of dementia as young people who have had covid begin to age. Maybe sooner, as early onset dementia.
Also an increase in coming years of heart disorders and COPD.

(7,473 posts)Today I went to a local convenience store and the customer behind me said, "Why are you wearing the mask"? When I noted to him that the Delta virus was a danger to all of us, he laughed.
I said nothing but when I went to my car, I said words that are really not nice.
I'm trying to get a couple of more years from this life. I wonder if I'll make it. Too many idiots out there who think they are not vulnerable. My health issues may get me but I'm doing my best to keep Covid protocols. My family, friends, town and country rely...at least most of them, on our efforts to follow the experts and do our best to follow the rules.
So many idiots out there think they are not at risk. Maybe they think they are OK but they may be spreading Covid or the Delta to everyone else.
I have taken a leave of absence from my volunteer job because I'm not comfortable with the customers telling the (vaccinated) truth or where we are going from here.
If you are an old timer, you will understand my position. I am alone and afraid. No-one to help, no prospects to recover. Never would believe this horror would ever happen.
Keep your mask, your distance and keep the cupboard full of food that you will need. Fewer trips to the grocery store, the better.

(1,000 posts)I held on to them until the Delta variant emerged. It is killing me not to go to the concert.....but, Ohio has not had a spectacular track record. It sickens me to think people are willing to send their kids back to school without precautions, this is the largest population of unvaxxed. I still do the standard precautions, I'm vaxxed, mask, social distance-but it amazes me how many people don't.
My musical tastes aren't getting any younger, but at this rate they might not be getting any older. I am still pissed off about John Prine.
