Map: Where People Are Most Vulnerable to the Delta Variant - New York Times

The patchwork nature of the coronavirus vaccination campaign in the United States has left people in many parts of the country still vulnerable to the virus and the fast-spreading Delta variant. Even areas with high vaccine uptake or those that were hit hard in previous waves of the pandemic could see new outbreaks if vaccination rates do not increase, an analysis conducted for The New York Times shows.

Estimates developed by PHICOR, a public health research group, suggest that more than 40 percent of U.S. residents may not be sufficiently protected against the Delta variant.

Some of the least-protected areas, like counties in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas, are currently facing large outbreaks. In Taney County, Mo., where only 28 percent of residents are fully vaccinated, the average number of daily reported cases is higher than ever, and hospitals in the area are seeing a surge of Covid-19 patients.

In other areas of the country, vaccination rates are as high as 70 to 80 percent. But researchers say it is likely that few if any counties have reached herd immunity — or the point at which enough people are immune that the virus is unlikely to spread within the community. Because the Delta variant is more contagious, that threshold is higher than before.

That means much of the country is still susceptible to the kind of rapid spread that can put stress on hospitals and lead to worse outcomes for patients. The best protection for every community, experts say, is to continue to vaccinate as many people as possible.

“Small increases in vaccination coverage can make a significant difference in terms of cutting down the number of cases” overall, said Bruce Y. Lee, a professor at the City University of New York who leads the PHICOR research effort. “If you get higher in terms of immunity, it can slow down the virus.”

Those of us who listened to Dr. Fauci and our President and Attorney General and went out and got vaccinated as soon as it was available and we were eligible are still in danger because of those who refuse to listen to the experts. Because this historic and virulent pandemic was ignored and dismissed for so long by the previous administration, we had no time to lose after the Biden administration made the vaccines available in record time - and yet there are areas of the country where vaccine compliance is still so low that it's still spreading, despite the vaccine and mask mandates, so all of us are still vulnerable.

Yet too many - including and unbelievably, some health care workers - are dragging their feet or outright refusing - so it continues to spread and some areas in this country are even worse off than before, which puts all areas of this country in danger.

I've read that 30-40% of healthcare workers in TN have refused to be vaxed! 😱🤯😳

Yikes!

Why are they working in medicine if they don't believe in science?

You are so right about no time to waste, but many are still resisting / refusing.

I did read that vax rates are going up, so there might still be some hope.

I still cannot wrap my head around people in Missouri getting "secret" vaxes, in disguises, so nobody knows...

Remember when we got vaxed? And posting effervescing with joy for the miracle of vaccines & our wonderful President Joe's roll out? I was still bouncing from Nov., but my vaxes prolonged my .

My friend who teaches drove across the entire state since, other than NYC, that was the only place offering the vaccine in the beginning. But then the pharmacies started offering it. CVS was the first, but the local one had no appointments available when I tried, so I drove south to another CVS where I could get an appointment. And I was so relieved - and excited - that I told others. Some were very interested, so I showed them how to access the site (posted here, I think it was by you!) showing where vaccines were available in the area. Yet there still were a couple who said they had no intention of getting it, one said he "didn't want to become a guinea pig" and the other (as you know) said he gets his medical advice from his anti-vaxx nurse/daughter. *sigh*

I kept going online & checking for available appointments to no avail.

Then one day in Feb I got so desperate, I decided I'd have to sit at the computer & constantly refresh the screen until an appt popped up.

I was lucky because I was successful in about an hour.

But it took awhile since, of all times, I happened to be in the dentist's chair at that moment! So by the time I could get an appointment - only a couple of hours - the local CVS was completely booked. And now the vaccine is available at any pharmacy, pharmacies in groceries, Walmart and at the large state run site at the local mall, many accepting walk-ins, and yet too few people are taking advantage of the widespread availability now.

To offer the vaccine to local residents when they've had some sort of community festival/gathering. President Biden has recommended this and we really need to be doing more of it!

seen or heard about mobile vaccine sites around here. The county vaccination rate is only 43%. This past week I saw the new case rate triple in a couple days. Still low compared to last winter and spring, but that quick jump looks like a bad sign of things to come. Our CDC designation went from low to moderate in one week.

Buffalo is an easy drive from here. People go there and back daily. Their county (Erie) CDC designation is "substantial." All Erie Co. offices and buildings have made masks mandatory. Masks are mandatory now for all Buffalo city and Erie County employees and health care workers.

I am also not far from the PA border. The PA county closest to me is very rural and very red. Their vaccination rate is very low and cases are climbing there.

I feel like I'm being hemmed in.

On the other hand, my New York county is holding at 65% vaccinated, not great considering that every pharmacy (even in small towns) is offering the vaccine, but the vaccination rate is still higher than counties to the south and west. Nevertheless, this county's positive test numbers are currently the highest in the state. Last year, New York had a quarantine in place - but people move and travel, especially now. It's "tourist season" in these parts (Lake George) and I've seen license plates from as far away as Alabama and Utah! Last summer everything was closed, this year everything is open with a vengeance, and the crowds are here. When I drove up north last week, the sidewalks in Lake George Village were packed, without a mask in sight.

Sending mobile vaccine sites to more rural area is a great idea, but will people respond? In the beginning, everyone was desperate to get vaccinated. Now, it seems like only the reluctant and antis are left. We already wasted a year, allowing the virus to spread unchecked - until we elected an administration that took immediate action and made the vaccine available in record time. But in many places at this late date, it may be too late to "stop the spread."

3 nationally known tourist sites in the county that each draw thousands of people every summer, not just to the sites, but to restaurants and hotels. I see people arriving in chartered tourist buses almost daily.

Yet almost nobody here wears masks. Places that used to carry them sold them off at reduced prices as soon as the CDC said they were no longer necessary and now they just don't carry them.

Glad that I stocked up on masks, hand sanitizer, sanitsry wipes, rubbing alcohol, and Lysol spray as soon as they came back on the market. I'm afraid that soon there will be a run on them as well as a shortage.

In the very beginning, when it was recommended that we sanitize public areas, I stood in front of a shelf full of Lysol-type products trying to decide which one I should pick up to bring to a local meeting I used to go to. About a week later, not just shelves, but entire aisles of cleaning products were bare. Thanks for the reminder, I regularly wipe down the interior of my car and I should stock up - again. And I should pick up more masks as well, I still have a few spares, but it looks like this is far from over - again.

And not only have I seen license plates from states as far away as Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, this week - for the first time in over a year - I saw two from Ontario. Is the border open? It's usual here to see cars from Ontario and Quebec, but it's been over a year that I've seen any from Canada and I was surprised.

is not supposed to be open until August 9. Biden says the US will not open the border until August 21 or 23 (I have heard both dates).

Yet there are reports about border crossings, like the guys who were fined $20,000 by Canada for faking covid vaccination. So I don't know how, but people are crossing.

Rural areas always have lower transmission rates due to less contact with other people....

So, I don't take this too seriously....

Urban areas have higher vaccination rates, but closer contact with people.

2 small cities and a handful of villages surrounded by daury farms. In summer, those farmers bring their produce and crafts into the cities and villages for farmers' markets. Rural areas also often have tourist sites. My county has 3 nationally known ones that draw thousands of people.

Our vaccination rate is 43%. This past week we moved up from a low infection designation by CDC to a moderate one when new cases tripled in just a few days.

Rural people also drive to cities for medical and business appointments or shopping.

Look at what's happening in rural areas of Missouri and Arkansas.
