Let parents make decision whether to mask their child in school, SC Gov. McMaster says

Gov. Henry McMaster said Wednesday parents should be responsible for deciding whether their child is masked in school — not the federal government, the state or the state’s Department of Education. “Parents know their children,” McMaster told reporters. “They know what’s good for them.”

The governor’s guidance comes as state Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman has called on students and teachers to wear masks during the upcoming school year. She’s also urged eligible people to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new health guidelines ...that include wearing masks indoors in places with high or substantial transmission COVID-19. But the education department said it can’t require the masks, citing a law that was attached to this year’s state budget that prevents districts from requiring students and staff to wear masks while at school.

Even with the new guidelines released by the CDC, McMaster said he would not wear a mask. “I’ve had the virus, and I’ve been vaccinated.” McMaster said, referring to his wife. “I do not plan to wear a mask.”

Wish these GOP governors would get their heads out of Donnie’s ass.

even as it shouldn't be, but in high schools it will wind up being the students' choice, at least in the halls. I work in a not huge high school but I don't know well over half the kids in the hall (I teach seniors and have done so for the past 3 or 4 years). How on earth will I know who is and isn't given parental permission to not wear masks?

How on earth could you be expected to enforce it? Selectively. It's hard enough to maintain a 'no cell phone' rule that applies to everyone in the class.

It would have to be the responsibility of the student to comply with the parent's wishes.

I literally can't imagine that working inside the high school classroom. I will say, I am highly motivated to have as much mask wearing as possible so I may try things. I am hoping that our BOE will mandate them.

It doesn't matter if Mommy told you to wear it all day. If other kids are not wearing them it will be very uncool to do so.

Have any States gone back to mandating masks at schools? I know some districts are, but has it been mandated at the State level anywhere?
I think Indiana said they will leave it to the districts.

and I think LA is as well. Only NC, LA, and VA in the south have Democratic governors. No Republican governors down here have required them statewide and at least 3 have banned districts from doing so (TX, FL, and SC)
