'They're all gone': Florida woman loses fiance, mother and grandma in 5 days to COVID-19

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —

A Florida woman is devastated after losing her fiancé, mother and grandmother all in the course of five days to COVID-19. Tiffany Devereaux and her family live in the Jacksonville area about 30 minutes south of the Georgia/Florida border. Devereaux lost her grandmother last Saturday, her fiancée last Monday and her mother last Wednesday.

“I had to skip going to my Meemaw’s funeral yesterday so I could get to the hospital to say goodbye to my Momma,” Devereaux told WJXT through tears.

Devereaux’s fiancé, 35-year-old Britt McCall, worked for the Duval County school system with his father, 60-year-old Mark McCall. Family members told CNN Mark McCall also became infected and died early Friday. His mother is still in the hospital.

Devereaux told WJXT that her 85-year-old grandmother was vaccinated, but already in poor health. The rest of the family was not. She also tested positive for the virus, but had mild symptoms. Devereaux said she now plans to get vaccinated and is encouraging everyone else to as well.

Lots of 85 year old people die but the #s of people who have been vaccinated and
still die of the disease is very very small.

She might never have been infected in the first place. There's no way to know for sure, of course - she may have caught it from someone else and spread it to her family members, rather than the other way around.

They're against "Obama" care until they need it. It's a lack of empathy. They're unable to put themselves in others' shoes. Once it hits them personally, they wake up. In general, this is why people become conservatives.

on the ground to puncture tires and protect themselves.

Or, better yet, have an armed guard posted to shoot out the tires of any car that approaches them - or the driver - and claim Florida's stand your ground law as defense.

They don’t need an armed guard. I suspect that people that have a gun permit will start showing up at street protests to protect themselves against murderous motorists - and per the law, the shooter can claim that he stood his or her ground (since the stand your ground law allows a person to gun down another person anywhere). DeSantis and the republicans in the legislature simply opened a bloody can of worms.

in the midst of an activity, you don't always see what"s happening in time to respond or to prevent something. Having someone as a lookout, alert to all signs of danger, gives an advantage of stopping a car before it can mow people down.

snip: "Vaccination rates in Georgia counties near Jacksonville are some of the lowest in the state. In Charlton County, just over the state line, only 15.1% of the population is fully vaccinated. In nearby Camden County, 28.9% of people are vaccinated."

not required for vaccinated people. You learned about it that way even if you don't know what a CDC or NIH is.

I'm presume some % of the unvaxxed took that as permission to unmask in indoor conditions.

Knowing that a half million other Americans had already died of the virus, it took multiple deaths in the family to encourage the woman to get vaccinated? WTF is wrong with people.

So many stories of people, likely conservatives, who cannot understand the need to be proactive about a situation. They seem never to care until they or someone very close to them, suffer some grave consequence. They cannot seem to understand that we do what we do because we want to be protected and want to protect others.

I get the schadenfreude, but this is truly sad and I feel for this woman. To lose your mother or grandmother is bad enough, but your fiancé and future FIL as well? I don't know if this is considered sociology, psychology, or rhetoric, but obviously what we are currently doing in terms of messaging is failing people like her and her family, and I hope we can learn to do better.

I have a friend in healthcare in Florida who says that they’re regularly seeing entire families testing positive with many of them sick. She also says that sometimes one or two in the family will be negative because they sneaked out to get vaccinated.
