Co-gold medals were awarded this week in the Olympics when high-jumpers Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar and Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy tied.

Sports. Humanity. Integrity, character. Here’s the medal ceremony. Beautiful…

I love how they placed the medals on each other. Nevilledog Aug 2021 #2
They are buddies. Neither wanted to see the other go home with anything less than Gold. Blue_true Aug 2021 #4

They had a choice of doing a jump-off in the High Jump or each getting a Gold. Both chose to forgo the jump-off and share the Gold, both did so enthusiastically. They are also good friends who have known each other and competed against each other for a few years.

They had defeated the rest of the field, so sharing the Gold was their choice once that was offered.

I would love to see other people make that choice in similar circumstances.

And, these 2 guys are pals on the pro circuit.
I'm a former high jumper so I watch this event all the time.
What's odd is that not only are they the only 2 to clear 2.37 meters (about 7'9&quot , but in the jumps up to that point they had the same number of misses.
If one had had one fewer miss, that person would have won.
Last thing: this dual gold made 2 other guys happy, because the guy who would have gotten bronze & the guy from Belarus who got bronze wouldn't have medaled.
Pretty cool!

If they had did the jump-off, one would have gotten Gold and one Silver. They had eliminated everyone else from the competition for Gold or Silver. When two competitors win Gold, the medals are Gold, Gold, Bronze (the Silver medal is not awarded, last I knew). Maybe things have changed where the Silver is awarded, in that case, the fourth place finisher will get the Bronze (there would be four medals given out).

I misread the table. They had the Italian guy's name in the second column with an asterisk. No missed that. I just saw all 3 columns filled.
Good catch!
