Nina Turner Learns the Hard Way That Democrats Like Joe Biden

New York Magazine

Nina Turner compared voting for Joe Biden last year to eating a “bowl of shit,” so it shouldn’t exactly be a surprise that she lost her bid for Congress after the race became about her disdain for the Democratic Establishment.

Turner lost a special primary election for Congress in Cleveland on Tuesday to rival Shontel Brown, a county councilwoman, by a margin of 50-45 percent. The seat was vacated when Marcia Fudge resigned from Congress to become Biden’s secretary of Housing and Urban Development. It seemed like a lock for Turner, a former state senator who raised the most money and went on TV the earliest. But then the campaign turned into an intra-Democratic proxy fight between the party’s left wing and “normie Democrats.”

Although Turner was originally a vocal leader in the “Ready for Hillary” Clinton presidential effort in 2014, she became one of Bernie Sanders’s most prominent surrogates in the actual 2016 presidential campaign. Afterward, Turner flirted with an offer to be Jill Stein’s running mate and declined to back Clinton against Donald Trump in the general election. Although Turner eventually backed Biden in 2020, she did so only after comparing a vote for the Democratic nominee to eating excrement: “It’s like saying to somebody, ‘You have a bowl of shit in front of you, and all you’ve got to do is eat half of it instead of the whole thing.’ It’s still shit.”

This was an opportunity for Brown, her top opponent in a splintered field, to turn the race into a referendum on Biden and loyalty to the Democratic Party in a district heavily populated by Black and Jewish members of the party’s base.

That’s all we’d need - another loudmouth deliberate-irritant provocateur with a Congressional platform.

Bad enough that we have Margie Traitor Gangrene and her ilk already there.

(1) She’s very divisive and, like some other progressives, is always looking to fight other Democrats as vehemently as possible.

(2) Yeah people like Joe Biden. And that means a lot of Democrats like Joe Biden.

(3) The progressive wing of the Democratic Party believes it is much larger and more powerful than it actually is. They’re just one part of the huge and diverse coalition that makes up the party, but they want to be the ones in charge.

They think they should be the only one in charge regardless of the facts that we win elections with people who back progressive ideas who are center left pragmatists like Joe Biden. Or at the congressional level Sean Casten, and Lauren Underwood, and Lucy McBath.

They are NOT the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Progressives are people like Rep. Clyburn, Speaker Pelosi, Senator Warren, NONE of whom would ever bash the Democratic Party (as opposed to offering occasional good advice).

before this run, had she rebuilt her local base?

Here in C-bus,my rep is Joyce Beatty, I however really align better with her last losing Dem primary opponent Morgan Harper. Harper, while growing up here, and having a resume of working for Rich Cordray at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, had not built a local base here. TBH, she seemed a bit of a carpet bagger.

Over the last 2 yrs, Harper, has been building a political & social base here, if she runs again, I suspect it will be harder for Beatty, even with her & her family history here in C-bus

Enemies of attainable progress and enablers of fascism, accelerated climate change, a far-right Supreme Court, and the rise of global oligarchs. It must be empowering for them to have changed the course of history for the worse. I do NOT include Bernie and AOC in this sorry grouping.

Whatever its myriad faults, Texas has the best expressions of any place I've ever heard of. Another couple of favourites: "A face that would make a freight train take a dirt road." And "If you were going to be a bigger idiot, you'd have to put on weight."
