(14,564 posts)the republican party is 90% on board with it. The vast majority of the leaders and high level elected officials are fully on board with it, and the party has reacted with great vengence against those who speak out about it. Those who were not on board have already quit or likely to be run off by 2024, and if not won't have any influence in stopping it.
The media and democratic party don't grasp the urgency of it, some get it, most don't.
The country at large is ready to roll over - our 1/3 know what is going on and hate it, their 1/3 know what is going on and love it, and the "middle 1/3" doesn't care.
ESPECIALLY if 45 runs, it will happen.
People don't get that what happened in Germany, Italy and Japan did not happen overnight, or even over a few years. Hitler started his trek to topple the government of Germany in the mid 20s, even did a stint in jai for a failed attempt.

(17,538 posts)An act like that would bring this old man to the street with pitchforks and torches. I would hope that someone would be behind me.
Republicans need to know that there is a bridge too far for them and that overturning an election through a legislative procedure would be that bridge. I would rather die on the streets than in a 40&8, which would be the Republicans next step.
As a young man, I swore to defend the Constitution and I have not renounced that oath. What I lack in youth I make up for with passion.

Millions fought & died defending our country, I will do the same if necessary.
What I will NOT do is sit on the sidelines & watch our country be destroyed.

Down here we have a story that goes: Never pick a fight with an old man, if he is too old to run and too weak to fight, he will probably just kill you.

(38,427 posts)...Who knows what things will be like 2 1/2 years from now?..No one knows the political situation that
far in advance...NO ONE!!!
...Many unexpected things happen in politics..I can name a whole lot..but so can you..Some very good I
might add. Got to add one right here: Obama elected as President of U.S.A...!!!
Some time ago, (in my lifetime) I never thought we would have a Afro-American as President of the U.S.A.
Well...guess what? It happened. Got reelected? I think so!....& ...I never thought we could possibly have
Trump as President ?....Impossible I thought..Well......he did get elected..??...
End of discussion...Time to hide.....

(36,464 posts)We're in a really bad place & it doesn't seem that the Party as a whole, sees it as such. Manchin & Sinema aren't the only senators who don't want to change the filibuster. There's a handful of them who feel the same, & are letting M & S take the heat. DiFi has stated she doesn't think democracy's in danger. Even Biden doesn't want to mess with the filibuster.
After 1/6/21, Nicole Wallace was triumphant as she declared that the guardrails of our democracy held. I was so glad she had Jason Johnson as a guest, who is never shy, & he said, "They barely held!"
I know dems don't do lockstep, but it's demoralizing that there doesn't seem to be a common sense of urgency in party leadership, over voter laws & our democracy. I honestly think there is a big segment of our side who are not taking this threat seriously enough, or that there is a confidence like Wallace's that our democracy will hold.

(10,429 posts)and republicons were looking for the weakest areas to target them next.
If we out here can clearly see the threat, I don't understand how any democratic elected politician cannot. I don't understand why they don't take it seriously. Unless some are just secure in their own position in life and just don't care. I expect that kind of "I got mine" attitude from republicons, it's depressing to think some Democrats might think that same way.

(18,486 posts)about the importance of not sitting out the midterms "to hold Obama's feet to the fire" and why it didn't matter of there was "just something about Hillary you don't like."
That's a primary reason we're in this situation.

(3,121 posts)good chance the answer is no. Don't ask permission and ACT. If you need to apologize later, at least something will get done. Fear isn't contageous, but the ones filling the airwaves with it will have us believe it is. One third of Americans may never come out of the rabbit hole, but two thirds can win this.

(3,578 posts)I will say one thing: I will NEVER accept Donald Trump as POTUS again.
NEVER.
Wed have nothing left to lose at that point, so trust me, we would fight back.
It would make the Belarus and Myanmar protests look small by comparison. I admire the peaceful protesters in those countries so much.
