Vaccine skeptics and anti-maskers are instead sucking down horse paste the latest snake-oil "miracle cure" once they become sick with COVID-19, resulting in an increase in calls to poison control centers, the Daily Beast reported Friday.
The horse paste contains ivermectin, which is normally used to treat parasites in humans and livestock but is now being prescribed by quack doctors and promoted in online forums as the latest version of the Trumpian drug hydroxychloroquine.
One of the groups behind the ivermectin craze is America's Frontline Doctors, the Trump-promoted Texas group that includes accused Capitol insurrectionist Dr. Simone Gold and "alien DNA" specialist Dr. Stella Immanuel.
"Devotees have besieged pharmacists with prescriptions from shady online prescribers, forcing pharmacies to crack down and treat the antiparasitic drugs like opioids," the Daily Beast reports. "As human-approved ivermectin prescriptions have been harder to come by, enthusiasts have taken to raiding rural tractor supply stores in search of ivermectin horse paste (packed with 'apple flavor!') and weighed the benefits of taking ivermectin 'sheep drench' and a noromectin 'injection for swine and cattle.'" ...........(more)

That would be an upside.

(86,612 posts)Is always a plus. It's not so much that they have a death wish but more that they think they can outsmart science by taking what they consider to be "home remedies" that they perceive to be the "in thing" now that science based info is definitely "out".

I boiled it for hours until almost everything was liquid. Let it sit in the fridge for several days then strained and bottled it. Gave it away for Christmas gifts and still have people asking for it again. Might do it next week.

(8,387 posts)You don't choose what you believe.
You do choose what you expose yourself to, but you never decided to believe something or not.
People want to believe they choose their beliefs, but have you ever simply decided "I'm going to believe X", or "I'm going to stop believing X".
I'll tell you what, just as an experiment, for the next five minutes, believe that I'm a rare land octopus and I've found my way into a library internet terminal to post this message. Just for five minutes. You can go back to all of your beliefs and disbeliefs when the five minutes is up.
Can you do that? You can say you can, but if you are honest with yourself, you can't really decide that you are going to believe something relatively innocuous for the next five minutes only. You can't, because you just don't believe it, and you can't control what you believe.
lindysalsagal
(20,684 posts)and watch your beliefs change with new experiences. I see it every day. But that requires allowing yourself to become exposed to new ideas. This is why the cities are liberal: They can't avoid people from different cultures, even if they try. But small town living affords complete insulation from differences. It's true everywhere, not just in the US.
Haggard Celine
(16,846 posts)That's not a good thing, because they don't really have any standards when it comes to discerning truth from bullshit.
If you don't have any scientific knowledge, or if you put the scientific knowledge you know on the same level as the rumors your friends spread about each other on Facebook, then it's easy to accept statements that contradict that scientific knowledge.
Someone comes along and tells you that the Earth is flat, and you disregard what your teachers told you because they're part of the system, and they're paid by the government to tell kids certain things, lies that THEY want you to believe so you'll be easier to control. Do you WANT to believe the Earth is flat? It's hard to say, but the argument makes sense to you because your knowledge is so limited and you don't accept sources that have any connection with the government.
So people can choose what they believe, in a sense, or at least what they ACCEPT as truth, by what they expose themselves to. And if they follow a con artist, they start thinking like him, and this con artist is actually able to make himself believe things that he wants to believe. He's taught himself to do this over the years so he can be a more effective con artist.
It's a different way of thinking and looking at the world. These people think that virtually everything they've been taught in school or in church or seen in mass media is a lie. When you don't accept truth because you believe you're being lied to, then you choose to believe whatever lies people like Alex Jones tell you. This is where we are with these people, and it is a scary place!
Effete Snob
(8,387 posts)Yeah.
I've toyed with the idea, upon being accused of being "closed minded" when I have simply reached a conclusion on the basis of evidence contradicting what someone is selling me, of suddenly having an epiphany and deciding to believe everything.
"Why, yes, maybe you're right. I see it now. I've been closed minded. From now on I will believe everything. In fact, I'm not stopping at what you are telling me - I believe everyone! And I believe in the gods. Not just one god. I believe in ALL the gods! I've decided to become completely open minded!"
Nobody can out-open-mind me!

(7,410 posts)Brazil is doing the largest study now with 3500 people. There havent been any definitive results either way as far as ivermectins effectiveness but several studies are expected to be published by the end of the year covering around 30,000 people in the trials in different countries.
These are official studies of course and it very well could have some merit.
Sounds like all the Jim Bobs are buying out all the horse paste at Tractor Supply though because they saw a post in their survival forum lol.

(19,243 posts)Basically, the active ingredient in Ivermectin so far only shows anti-viral properties in cell culture studies, when administered at a dosage far above what you'd get in commercial livestock medication. And in in-vivo studies when in the bloodstream, it binds to certain blood proteins that reduce it's activity to the point that you can't ingest enough to get anti-viral properties in living, breathing humans without risking serious bodily harm.

Thats the conclusion of the Together Trial, which has subjected several purported nonvaccine treatments for COVID-19 to carefully designed clinical testing. The trial is supervised by McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, and conducted in Brazil.....
Among the 1,500 patients in the study, he said, Ivermectin showed no effect whatsoever on the trials outcome goals whether patients required extended observation in the emergency room or hospitalization.
In our specific trial, he said, we do not see the treatment benefit that a lot of the advocates believe should have been seen.....
The findings on Ivermectin are yet another blow for advocates promoting the drug as a magic bullet against COVID-19. Ivermectin was developed as a treatment for parasitical diseases, mostly for veterinarians, though its also used against some human parasites.
