What are you doing about your kid/kids going back to school? Especially in states like mine ( Thanks Abbut) where mask mandates are not allowed.
This just seems like a nightmare scenario.

(1,109 posts)I no longer have school-age children; however, what of requesting a Special Permit (in writing, like a prescription) from your kids doctor(s) wherein she/he might authorize them (your kids) to at least wear face coverings at all times when in their classrooms.

(17,045 posts)But here, the kids can wear a mask. School districts just cannot mandate it. Which I find ludicrous!

(23,313 posts)My son will be a junior in HS hes fully vaccinated and most of his peers are as well. However, there are those batshit parents who wont get their kiddos the shot and then theres the kiddos that are too young. My gawd. I am very worried.

(17,045 posts)What is happening here is outrageous!
My nephew is 10 years old and has not be open to vaccination yet. His parents will make sure he wears a mask, but what about the other kids?

(15,325 posts)One starts HS. She's finished her middle school at home since covid 1st shut everything down.
I believe her HS approach is a mask optional, & she will wear one. She's been vaxxed.
Not too worried about the 3 yr old as she's been attending her montessori this year & they are absolutely STRICT on their daily rules.
The HS is my big fear, even tho she's been vaxxed & wears her mask.
I despise Abbott the killer.

(11,949 posts)A majority of kids will wear masks. 80% in my store do including the kids. A month ago it was 20% maybe.
Our county had a pretty good vaccine rate for Florida and my are of the county is less red, more purple than others. So Id imagined my part of the county is approaching 70%.
If my 16 year old was vaccinated and masked I would not lose sleep. Those under 12 are a different story.
If Delta proceeds as predicted our Governor has politically fucked up. He has double down on doing nothing as we see our neighbors and friends getting sick and going to crowded hospitals. His poll numbers have dropped to the low to mid 40s and if we have chaos in the schools it will go lower.

(2,343 posts)to death. My daughter is going in to 5th grade. She's too young for the vaccine. I live in a red area of blue Harris county, so I'm sure a lot of the other kids parents don't think covid is a big deal. I hate abbott with every ounce of my being.

(1,898 posts)I live in Texas - so we have to deal with that mf'r Abbott. He had in person classes most of last semester - but I have
no idea how our school district is going to handle it if delta heats up even more than it has. I would rather he have in person
classes if possible - but who knows how this will go. If in my estimation, there aren't adequate safeguards in place, I'll homeschool
him. At least I'm self employed and have that option.

(5,165 posts)If they hadn't been I would keep my child at home. Health and life supersede a dangerous environment, something Republicans are hell bent on creating no matter the cost.
My child is fully vaccinated and has to mask, and I'm still concerned about this. Viral load has so much to do with this virus, and we will see outbreaks.
A 20 year old daughter of my husband's friend died within 24hours from Covid last week, just devastating. She came home from work at local DQ, said she didn't feel good and her parents asked if she needed to go to doctor, she said no went to bed. Woke up next morning said she couldn't breathe and needed to go to hospital, they called ambulance, she didn't even make it to the hospital.
Be as cautious as you feel neccessary.

(57,073 posts)Even if vaxed, as vaxed folks can, and often do, end up with long haul! 19% per Harvard epidemiologist, Dr. Ding.
No link, but for those with Twitter, I'm sure you can sesrch it up.
He also stated approx 1 in 12 kids will have long haul.
No way would I send my child into a school.at this time.
In the grand scheme of a child's life, homeschooling is not likely to be as harmful as potential organ damage, etc.
Cloth masks are no longer good enough because delta causes 1,000 times the viral load & resultant shedding, again per Dr. Ding.
So, even with a mask mandate, kids are likely to be wearing cutsey but ineffective masks.

(29,149 posts)I think that my son's school, which has been very diligent and had strong and successful protocols in place last year, might have moved in that direction anyway, though. I really feel for parents in your state and similar states, Texasgal. It's got to be a tough situation, fraught with anxieties.

(8,922 posts)Anxiously waiting for school board to make a decision on the masks. We have a lot of magats in our area. Public input has been reported to be 60/40 in favor of choice. Needless to say I'm getting nervous about this situation.

He wants to be vaccinated and they would let him do it if they could.

(25,300 posts)I am very worried.
Last year, they did not send her at all
She is non-verbal and freaks out if a mask is applied to her face.
They sent her a few weeks ago for the first time and she loved it....
Now with delta, I don't know what their plans are....

(23,097 posts)What a shit show otherwise, especially if they're under 12. Over 12, they'd already have their vaccines, would wear masks and off to school unless they had a bad risk factor. I really don't know what we would have done? I'm thinking it would depend on the child. If they are loners and very computer savy and smart, I'd probably home school them. But what if they weren't? What if they really needed the face to face interaction to thrive?
I really hate these repug governors who are trying to kill us for their personal profit. This would all be so much easier if it wasn't for all the murderers and total fucking rw idiots around. Now it's especially heinous that they are targeting children.

(5,557 posts)If they haven't approved the vaccines for six year olds yet, it's for good reason, and there is nothing I can do.
I also remain convinced that keeping my kids home is more negatively impactfuldue to lack of social skill development than the risk I'm sending them.
It's an unfortunate scenario though, with no real great options

(16,095 posts)and are vaccinated, their school has been very safety oriented, so I expect that will continue. They are making vaccinations available to all and strongly encouraging vaccination. But, as a state college, they can't mandate vaccines.
My youngest is also vaccinated. Our school has no mask mandate and very few people in our county are vaccinated. He is going to school. We'll see how it goes. I suspect that it will be shit show.
