"The COVID-19 Scenario Modeling Hub, a group of researchers working in consultation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have predicted that due to Delta, U.S. Covid cases will steadily climb, peaking in mid-October with at least triple the number of deaths we have now. Worst-case, it could be almost as bad as it was last winter, depending on how many people get vaccinated and what mitigation strategies people take (masking, distancing),"

That's a kick in the ass.
Because the anti vaxxers and maskers I know aren't budging an inch in their opinions, cheerfully walking hand in hand with stupidity to their graves, and not giving a fuck about who they take with them, including their own kids.
I am vaccinated, and hope to live to see Donald Fucking Trump brought to justice for doing this to my country.

(86,601 posts)I stayed home all day due to smoke and too many fools running around without masks. I'll go to the grocery store early tomorrow and be done with it all, only go out to appointments.

Me too! I just had to move during a time when there is nothing for rent anywhere in the state that I could afford. Suddenly this place was open and I got in, I'd be in my car otherwise... been there done that a few years ago, not into doing it ever again. So I must say I am thankful for this shelter.

(111,255 posts)I expect NM to enter the "very high" category within the next couple of days, even with our decent vaccination rate.
Since younger people are less likely to be vaccinated, we're heading into 1918 flu territory.

(205,320 posts)I just got a call from my Dad's cousin to let me know that her sister has died - of Covid. And she was vaccinated.
questionseverything
(9,654 posts)Was she older?
Under lying conditions?
Rhiannon12866
(205,320 posts)And she had arthritis and was recovering from foot surgery. Her sister still has no idea how she contracted it since they all got vaccinated and wore masks. That side of my Dad's family are all lifelong Democrats and they take the virus seriously. It really hit me since I liked her a lot - she was the family historian - and she's the first person I know to contract Covid.
questionseverything
(9,654 posts)Again so very sorry for your loss
Rhiannon12866
(205,320 posts)She thought she might have been exposed since her children (she had 4 and the eldest came from Alaska) had a small family gathering for her birthday, but they were told that the timing wasn't right, so they have no idea when and where she contracted it.
I'm guessing that a lot of people, like her, who are taking precautions are having similar experiences. We had a strict mask mandate here in New York until July, masks were required to enter any store or business and it was enforced. But, unfortunately, everything "opened up" just in time for Delta to show up. And now only the unvaccinated are required to wear masks - so much for "the honor system." *sigh*

(205,320 posts)Even those who have taken every precaution - masks and getting vaccinated - are now getting sick due to the spread caused by those who inexplicably refuse to get vaccinated. Not to mention the danger to young kids who can't be vaccinated yet.

(38 posts)Take extra precautions even if you are fully vaccinated. DH and I have both tested positive in the last week. We were both masking up all the time except within our home. No social life no attendance to social outings. Unfortunately, we are in coastal county of Alabama which is seeing a massive outbreak due to huge tourist influx plus the anti-everything people. Even a local Walmart shut down as well as many restaurants due to positive workers. Take extra care!!!!!

(38 posts)I don't want anyone to panic. We are doing okay. It seems mostly like a head cold with a double whammy of allergies. Started with really runny noses and lots of sneezing. Into 2nd week of quarantine and everyday better. I just wanted everyone to be aware even when you do everything you can to follow guidance and protocols, sometimes it just doesn't work. But the thing is, the vaccine is working because neither of us are in the hospital or in dire straits. So yay vaccine!! Take care and be aware and safe!

(19,551 posts)Just got diagnosed with Delta.
22 years old, unvaccinated.
Kept contact short, just long enough to announce she won't be back for a while.
Lovely person and accomplished equestrian.
I hope she makes it, she was wracked with coughing spells.
The very young think they're immortal.

(153,160 posts)I understand young people take risks but doesn't the threat of long-term damage bother them? Why take such a chance....and who knows how many people she passed it on to. I really don't get it (I was a sergeant in the military when I was 22).
orangecrush
(19,551 posts)She has little or no political leaning, but like many rural/rust belt young people, is culturally conditioned by what's around her.
Not making excuses, just an observation.
I see it locally, when the factories went away and the heroin/meth moved in, these little storefront predatory "churches" sprang up, with right wing pastors dictating politics to their "flock".
It's required for acceptance by the F-250 crowd, and when you're young and unguided, acceptance is everything.
And thank you for your service, Skittles!

(11,885 posts)Too many State Governors policies are spreading the virus more, and even to the children. Too many propagandists misleading people into believing their propaganda. They're killing a lot of their own, which is backfiring on them badly now. These radical GOP Governors are turning their states more blue from doing this, and face re-election defeats from it.
As cases explode even more, many more anti maskers will be getting a vaccine and realized they've been duped, then turn on those that lied to them. The virus will find all those unvaccinated, and that go unmasked , and it will again hurt our economy from their actions spreading it. The next wave will be even worse than this one, and they are the ones who again will be responsible for it, and needlessly suffer the worst consequences from it.
These politicians conning people into believing they're followers are the victims,
and this is an attack on anyone's freedoms are quickly losing their support, and credibility. Enabling large crowds at sporting and other events, concerts, and forcing children back to school without masking will backfire badly on them, and allow this virus to rage on in this country. Wish it wasn't happening again , but it is. Just think how much worse it would be if we didn't elect Biden, keep control in the House, and get Senate control.

(19,551 posts)Things are going to be broken to the point where they can't be fixed.
MyMission
(1,850 posts)I thought of that last year, rather than the meek it's those of us who wear masks who will survive.
The world is already a different place. A lot of folks still want to "return to normal" but there's a new normal forming and there's no going back. Alpha, Delta, Lambda, Et Cetera.
Things already can't be fixed. We need to rebuild. Build back better.
The crazy GQP is a toxic mess that won't back down. May covid reduce their numbers.

That would make the death rate among the unvaxed unheard of

(2,569 posts)In April, after I got my last vaccination shot, I moved from Tucson to Atchison KS.
Things were going well, then Delta erupted. Now, Kansas isn't doing particularly well on vaccinations....but right across the river from me is Missouri. Their rates are appalling, and I frequently have to go to St. Joseph MO for building materials. Home Despot, Lowes, Menards, the only masks I see are on the checkers. You may rest assured that I'm double masking.
Damn it!

(6,254 posts)been out and about as normal. Today at Costco about 40% were masked but this an area that attracts many Asians who work for Lockheed. (7,473 posts)We all need to take every caution possible. It is not difficult to put a mask on. It is far more difficult to cope with any of these viruses. Hospitals are full, medical workers are exhausted. There is no-one to replace these wonderful workers.
We are all at risk now, better to take every precaution possible. The worst may be yet to come.
