I try to plan shopping trips to reduce exposure. Today was Costco day, so I made my list, donned my mask and waded into the fray. Here in in the KC area I see more people wearing masks, although the majority are still face-naked. People seem respectful of other peoples' choices, however, and everyone goes about their business. Today was the exception.
I was standing in line (socially distanced) to check out when a female shopper (not wearing a mask) came alongside and told (not asked) me to move forward as I was "holding up the line." Costco still has the 6' stickers on the floor and I was smack dab on one. I told her I'd move up when there was room. She told me again to move up; I told her no. She said, and I quote, "You either move or I'm going to move you." I told her to go away and leave me alone. The next thing I know I'm on the floor and she's on top of me, yanking my mask off, fists and nails flying. I got called a "f-ing sheep" (among other things) and it seemed like forever until Costco staff pulled her off of me. Costco security held her; all the while she is cursing and screaming, spit flying, acting like a complete fool.
My stubbornness and my temper are not my best qualities, and it took everything I possessed not to slap this harpy into the middle of next week. Of course if would have looked bad had I sucker punched her while she was being held, but I have to admit it entered my mind. The police arrived quickly and she told them it was "all my fault." Fortunately this happened right in front of the registers, and security footage (along with numerous witnesses) told the tale. I was asked if I wanted to press charges. That was a big YES, so they hauled her butt to jail.
I don't know what it is about me that invites the crazies. After last year's encounter with my neighbor (may she rest in peace) I figured it couldn't happen again, could it? I was wrong.
I'm ok, no injuries to speak of and I made it home with my purchases. Rusty has informed me he's doing all the shopping from now on. Stay safe everyone!

(47,732 posts)Sounds like something out of a science fiction movie where lots of people suddenly start going batshit crazy. Maybe it is some kind of satellite laser beams aimed at people's brains and controlled by the Chinese or maybe Bill Gates! Being it appears to be contagious, perhaps it is caused by alien brain worms.
It really is the most bizarre thing that I've ever seen in real life. More like a bad Star Trek episode.

(2,061 posts)I've seriously wondered about that.
If maybe Covid has an unknown effect on some people. Some get it and it affects their lungs and they have respiratory issues. Maybe some get it and it affects their brains? Like, the virus wants to live, wants to spread, so it affects their brains to make them anti-mask, anti-vax, ready to open the schools and expose our children?
Like you said, bizarre, like a bad Star Trek episode.

(34,139 posts)It was way too close to reality.
I just checked - it's streaming free on "CWseed" and with a subscription on Paramount. I'm not sure what "CWseed" is - it seems to be a free off shoot of CW (which I think started out as Country & Western).

(47,732 posts)and I love Tony Shalhoub. The creators had planned the storyline for four seasons and the bugs would have eventually invaded Wall Street, Silicon Valley, and Hollywood. They claim the problem was they were "trying to be as weird and anti-network as could be, and it was probably a mistake to do that on a network".
Maybe it might be easier to digest now that we have a sane president in the White House and the nutters have lost some of their power. When it first aired, it was uncomfortably prophetic.

(12,496 posts)Acting like this because deep down they know they're out of control and want limits placed on them.
They crave to be controlled. They seek out authoritarians to control them or give them permission.
Punching them out until they submit may be what in the deep psyche of these magats want more than anything.
They are like masochists begging people who have innate self control to control them, because they've lost control.
Maybe they are so out of control they want to die, as they are letting themselves get infected and basically provoking people to retaliate and limit them.

(1,040 posts)I used to be a paralegal and worked for the DA (in another state) up until a few years ago. The differences between assault and battery are very clear. Assault is simply putting someone in "apprehension of harm." You don't have to touch them. Battery is when you are physically touched and obviously there are differing degrees. Simple assault and battery, according to my research in our State's statutes, are typically misdemeanors, but still carry harsh penalties. Not enough happened for it to be aggravated, so it probably won't hop up to felony status.
I am developing some bruises and found some scratches, which have been photographed and will be documented. I'll be making a same-day appt with my dr tomorrow and am considering a civil suit against her. I'll also be monitoring myself for COVID symptoms and will be getting tested.

Just another example of tRump derangement syndrome. Every time I go out to the supermarket I worry about such an encounter. I've absolutely no doubt that if something happened like that to me in the presence of witnesses, with security cameras, etc., I'd demand they have her dragged back to security and call the police, and there is no doubt whatsoever that I'd have charges pressed against the person for assault and battery.

(22 posts)My modest suggestions, already offered above:
1) See to your injuries.
2) See to your mental health; getting blindsided like that is really traumatic.
3) Stand firm on the charges. Go to court.
4) Pursue your options through an attorney.
5) Tell rusty JB says be extra nice to you. Flowers an' stuff.
My two cents:
In all those things, listen with compassion and watch for opportunities for mercy. That doesn't mean you roll over and let them off the hook, but sometimes a little kindness can do much more than punishment.
My friend's autistic teenage son was assaulted at a public bus stop. The attacker grabbed his prescription eyeglasses and stomped them, destroying them. Plenty of witnesses and camera footage meant the attacker was tracked down in short order.
In the end, my friend and her son met w/ the teenager who had done the deed along with the attacker's father in a police-arbitrated conference. Turns out the father had lost his job and their rental home a couple months prior. The family of four was living in a single low-grade hotel room, wondering every day if they'd be on the street the next. The attacker, a HS kid, was forced to work to provide money to keep the roof over their heads and food in their bellies. He didn't get any time to be a kid, to play sports at school, socialize, etc.
The attacker had no history of violent behavior. He was clearly deeply ashamed, as was his father. Both apologized for the attack.
In the end, my friend's son declined to press any charges or even ask for the replacement of his eyeglasses, which he and his mamma could not so easily afford. In my friend's words, "there really is such a thing as the school-to-prison pipeline, and this kid was staring down the throat of the thing." "Maybe this allows him to avoid it; maybe it swallows up him anyway, but in this one moment we were not complicit."
Trauma begets trauma. Remember that you don't know what happened to that woman before you met her at Costco, and simple vengeance can serve to make matters worse. If you can see a way to break the cycle, I promise it's worth it. If only for your own soul. (I'm atheist; I don't believe in souls, but you know what I mean.)
Good on ya, lady. Gentle vibes and loving juju pointed your way.
