NO, migrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border are *not* driving the national surge in COVID-19

NO, migrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border are *not* driving the national surge in COVID-19 cases, public health experts say.

PHOENIX (AP) — As the delta variant fuels an increase of COVID-19 cases in the U.S., some of President Joe Biden’s critics blame the surge on his border policies, which allow some migrants to enter the country to apply for asylum.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis last week accused Biden of “helping to facilitate” the spread of the coronavirus. Fox News host Sean Hannity referred to migrants causing “the biggest super-spreader event” and incorrectly asserted that none was being tested.

But public health experts say arriving migrants are not driving the rising infections in the U.S. The main culprits are people who refuse to get vaccinated. Furthermore, migrants who are allowed to enter are generally tested for COVID-19 and given hotel rooms to quarantine if they test positive, though federal authorities have not made data available about such cases.

. . .

WHAT DO PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY IS FUELING THE INCREASE IN CASES IN THE U.S.?

The key factors behind the recent spike in COVID-19 cases are people in U.S. communities who are unvaccinated and are not following guidance from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about the highly contagious delta variant, according to public health experts.

We know that the "critics" are stupid and acting in bad faith. Vaccinating people crossing the border would be a good public health strategy regardless of whether they were deported or allowed asylum. You are absolutely right about that. The problem is that the "critics" already know that this criticism is bullshit (unless they are really stupid and ignorant). They aren't arguing for effective public health policy. Their goal is to vilify Brown people coming across the border and blame "weak" radical leftists Joe Biden and Democrats fir allowing our country to be overrun by dirty virulent "others".

It won't change the minds of the idiots who already accept the lies.

It is obvious to anyone with two functioning neurons that immigration would not be driving any surge in viral transmission, especially in a time where the borders are being more heavily surveilled.

We need to understand that the ONLY thing that Republicans have in the way of an electoral strategy is to get their base highly engaged and to suppress the Democratic vote. They have nothing by racism, xenophobia, anti-government rhetoric, and changing the laws in states they control to make it harder to vote. They also have a coordinated propaganda environment with Fox, OANN, Newsmax, right wing radio, and internet that gets the messaging out to the blind followers, and seeps into the mainstream media.
