Or percussive, pulmonary therapy. And yeah, it basically thumps thick mucus loose so that it can be coughed up (by patients with that ability) or suctioned out (for intubated patients). You usually only see that kind of device on a patient when the bed doesn’t have percussive therapy built in.

Keep in mind that I TYPICALLY worked with adult patients, although I did take care of some older kids needing lung transplant (they were Cystic Fibrosis patients), but I also did shifts on the pediatric cardiac ICU.

My patients these days are adult, cardiac arrest patients.

...pediatric respiratory therapy, so the nurses did the pulmonary hygiene. Lots of cystic fibrosis patients. We'd pound on their chests with curved hands. It was called cupping, and it was exhausting.

Some premie nurseries used to use the handles of electric toothbrushes to accomplish this procedure on very small babies.
