The school district for Marce Herz Middle School in the Reno area of northern Nevada says
80 people were exposed to the coronavirus as a result of a parent knowingly sending the child to school two days after learning the student had tested positive for COVID-19.
The Washoe County School District said in a statement Wednesday that
the parent with the presumably-infectious child also tested positive and refused to communicate with the school. No identities were released.
Some students were sent home to quarantine but the district did not specify how many were. Those kept from school are expected to participate in home-learning and keep up with the school work, the district said.
Unvaccinated students sent home may return to school if they take a COVID-19 test after five days of quarantine and test negative and are free of symptoms, the district said. Fully vaccinated students may return to school if they are free of symptoms and bring their vaccination record for validation by a school nurse, the district said.

(15,975 posts)I don't care seems to be their mindset.
If my child was infected I'd want to bring charges against this parent.

(3,346 posts)Parents would often load their kids up with Tylenol or Advil and send them to school. Over the many years, I have had so many viruses thanks to the germ factory that preschools are.

...any long-term teacher knows that kids will come to school with parents (and guardians) knowing the kids are sick.
Sometimes, the parent doesn't care or is stupid, but sometimes sending the kid to school makes sense (to them). Believe me - I've seen kids living with parents who are awful (drug dealers, abusive, etc.), and kids whose only meal is the school breakfast/lunch, and kids with parents who are working and simply cannot take time off to care for the kid.
One time I had a middle school student who was sick, and the school could not contact the single parent. The social worker discovered that the parent was working on-the-road in another state, while the middle schooler was taking care of two younger siblings. BTW, a review did NOT take the kids away from the parent, and was happy the parent was employed.
Some parents who are not documented refuse to go to a clinic or doctor for fear they will be discovered and deported, so they send the sick kid to school hoping a school nurse will help out. Teachers are sometimes the first to discover serious illness and disease in kids. A low-income kid may be legally born in the US, and qualify for Medicaid, but the illegal parents won't/don't apply. It can be a mess getting a kid to see a doctor without a parent, but those parents won't answer the phone.
Here in Florida our typical school has about 25% of the parents born out of the US. You can easily hear 3-4 languages, and not just Spanish, but Vietnamese, Arabic, Polish, Croatian, or Haitian French. Much of the public information from the school about Covid is unreadable to those parents anyway. The fact that a parent doesn't communicate is common also.
Schools reflect very complex issues, and each situation requires individual attention.

(1,495 posts)Kids would have the flu, norovirus, bad colds, lice, and the parents would send them to school throwing up. I had to homeschool my youngest before Covid because he had asthma and catching any virus was a trigger, even a mild cold. I tried to send him to kindergarten and he missed half the year, so I just gave up and pulled him out.
