Three new conditions reported by a small number of people after vaccination with COVID-19 shots from Pfizer (PFE.N) and Moderna (MRNA.O) are being studied to assess if they may be possible side-effects, Europe's drugs regulator said on Wednesday.
Erythema multiforme, a form of allergic skin reaction; glomerulonephritis or kidney inflammation; and nephrotic syndrome, a renal disorder characterised by heavy urinary protein losses, are being studied by the safety committee of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), according to the regulator.
Pfizer, by far the biggest supplier of COVID-19 vaccines to the European Union, and Moderna did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.

"The watchdog did not give details on Wednesday on how many cases of the new conditions were recorded, but said it had requested more data from the companies. The EMA did not recommend changes to the labelling of the vaccines.
It disclosed the new assessments as part of routine updates to the safety section of all authorised vaccines' database and added menstrual disorders as a condition it was studying for vaccines, including those from AstraZeneca (AZN.L) and J&J (JNJ.N), after the EMA's update last week.
Moderna's shares, which have climbed more than 75% to Tuesday's close since mid-July when it joined the S&P 500 index (.SPX), fell about 16% to $384 on Wednesday.
BioNTech's U.S.-listed shares were down 14.4% and Pfizer nearly 4%."
News is news whether we like or not.

(34,072 posts)It's pretty trivial to point to warnings added over time in most medicines/vaccinations. We're just seeing it in an accelerated timeline here where everyone is focused on the vaccine. Ordinarily most people wouldn't even be paying attention by the time these new concerns were noted.
Just like the other concerns that arose - you evaluate them, craft new warnings if there is a ore vulnerable population/advices to doctors as to how to treat the side effects, and move on.
Anyone who didn't expect this hasn't been paying much attention.

(34,072 posts)This is just part of the process with any new medicine/vaccine.
Yes, it is important to pay attention to it and to ferret out whether it is anything to worry about or not. If it is, it likely impacts few people (who might be advised not to take this partcicular vaccine) - or may require new advice to doctors about how to treat it (like the rare clotting disorder that the ordinary treatment would make worse.)

(2,636 posts)It was the fastest up until now. No internet, so much slower communications....
mRNA has been around since Clinton funded the Human Genome Project, so it's not quite as fast as TFG would lead us to believe.
Once boosters are approved, I'll get one. I figured at the beginning of this we'd likely need yearly covid vaccines, just like our flu shots, precisely because of the growing anti-vaxx sentiment, which TFG's politicization increased exponentially.

A great thing about the scientific method is that it learns from mistakes. People as individuals however, often don't.
