Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsAfter the Select Committee finishes its investigation, can it make a criminal referral to the DOJ?
With what we know already, it is hard to imagine that there will not be a lot more information uncovered, much of it criminal in nature?
The question is, how long will it take for the Committee to finish its job? If they use Benghazi as a guide, they will be in no hurry to finish.
Also, it is difficult to believe that no one will spill the beans. That they will protect Donald Trump at all costs, including perjury?
How much evidence will they need to make a criminal referral?
How aggressively will Merrick Garland pursue it once he receives it?
Is that the direction we are headed?

(33,643 posts)He's gotten out of everything so far because of the lack of criminal statutes to bring charges against him ... collusion, the Ukraine fiasco, etc.
What actual law do you think he broke in his efforts?
The POTUS attempting to corrupt the Justice Department for political ends is basically a political no-no, not something that's codified as illegal, with jail time as a penalty.
It SHOULD BE, but it's not, AFAIK.
This investigation is going to basically discover massive systemic problems with how much power a POTUS has, and to me it's much more important what the Dem Congress does to make sure much of what IQ45 did ... can't happen again without legal jeopardy ... than it is to specifically nail Trump, as much as I'd love to see that.
However, given that I've heard of no formal moves to criminalize TFG's Russia OR Ukraine-related behavior, I'm holding out exactly ZERO hope of anything like that happening.

So, just charge him with sedition and incitement to insurrection and conspiracy and get it over with. Make him answer under oath, regardless of what a jury might find.
