Bed bugs are every city-dweller's biggest fear, and new data suggests that the issue isn't confined to just NYC and LA. Pest control company Orkin compiled a list of the 50 most bed buginfested cities in the US right now, revealing that some metropolitan areas aren't as immune as you'd expect.Orkin based its latest findings on which cities required the most bed bug treatments between December 2019 and November 2020. The ranking took both residential and commercial treatments into consideration.

(182,988 posts)Caritas started very grass roots as a means of helping homeless people primarily families. Its grown and learned over the years. One big problem for the homeless especially with substance issues is that the weight of life comes rushing back at them and the often relapse. Caritas provides them with basically a whole house set up so they can use their money to pay bills not buy basic stuff. One problem has been furniture. Richmond, Ive been told, is a bed bug infested city. You cant use chemicals to really get rid of them but you can cook them out. UPS donated a room - 15x15 or 20x20 I think - that is one big oven or kiln. It kills the bed bugs so donated furniture can be used again.

(123 posts)Are they counting cases or is this on a per capita basis? Because if it's total number of cases per city, I would expect huge cities like NYC, Chicago, Houston, LA, to top the list.

(63,221 posts)yet. I don't think we will have to be going there for quite a while. My manager might, but I won't. Nothing freaks me out more than bedbugs and other bug infestations.
Thank god Boston is not on that list. I get the willies just thinking about it.

(16,864 posts)Sometimes when I'm trying to sleep I'll get the feeling that a spider just walked across my face and it will make me paranoid. I've known a few people who have been bitten by spiders and have had to get flesh removed. It creeps me the fuck out. If I was checking into a place and found bedbugs, I don't know what I would do. I'd probably go sleep at the airport or something.

I am lucky in that I rarely see any insects inside my apartment, but it has happened on occassion and when it does I completely lose it and will almost destroy the place trying to kill it.
I wish I wasn't so afraid of them, but I have a horrible phobia and I have no control over my aversion to them.

(8,688 posts)And fairly certain both myself and kid got bedbug bite. The Omni has had issues with bedbugs in the past. Just one bite fortunately so not a big deal. Their outdoor pool is amazing so maybe worth it!

While bed bugs are found in multiple areas, the most prevalent place to actually get them to take home is at a movie theater, because the other places are mostly visited in the daytime and people are moving about. When you are in a movie theater, you are sitting still in darkness for two hours, allowing them to crawl onto you.
People know bed bugs are in hotels and take precautions. Nursing homes have them, but visitors don't take them home. The same for schools and office buildings, which are lit. College dorms would be a good place to take them home, but more people visit movie theaters than are attending college.
While bed bugs are in a lot of buildings and vehicles, it's what's the best place to get them to take home.
That's movie theaters. No one ever thinks that watching a movie greatly exposes them to bed bugs.

(34,195 posts)Buses, planes, subways, restaurants, doctors waiting rooms -- any place people gather bugs can drop off, linger, and climb onto the next person.
A dormitory at the University of New Mexico was recently infected with bed bugs because students frequented a local highly rated restaurant that was infected and they brought the bugs back to the dorm.
Movie theaters were not listed in the link I posted.
If you have a link that shows movie theaters listed as the number one source I would like to compare it with the one I posted.
