Once vaccinations began to be given to the mass of people who wanted them, I stopped doing my weekend supermarket mask reports. Now, I find it necessary to begin again. In the meantime, I have moved from my home in St. Paul to a suburb on the west side of the Twin Cities metro.
So, today, I shopped at Lunds/Byerly's, since there is one near my home. There is a Cub here, a Trader Joes, and a Whole Foods, as well, along with an Aldi's. All within a five-minute drive from our new digs.
When I arrived at the store, I donned my mask, as I have done for so long. The difference now, though, is that the only other masks I saw were on the employees in the store. Sadly, I saw no other customers wearing masks today.
I fear we have lost the battle. I'm fully vaccinated. Probably many others I saw today are, as well. However, the pandemic rages on, so I'm still masking up. I wish others would do so, as well.
Yesterday, when we took delivery of our new car, my wife and I wore masks. Nobody else in the dealership wore a mask, though. Our salesperson volunteered that he was vaccinated, at least.
I got a strong stink-eye from one customer at the supermarket. He looked like he was about to offer some "sheeple" comment, but thought better of it after locking eyes with me. I do not radiate a peaceful attitude from my eyes about such nonsense.

The interesting thing to me is that masking compliance among customers was running about 2:1 females over males.
Hmmmm.

So, at the grocery yesterday, it was 100% compliance with the masks.

(38,311 posts)This is solidly Democratic California. The vaccination rate is about 75%
In California's Republican Central Valley the percentage of mask wearers is much less.

(5,376 posts)I dunno, but it seems like most people just can't keep up with the changing nature of the pandemic.
It seems like there is a month's lag, and that's with the people _trying_ to keep up and modify their behavior.
Thanks for the post.

(991 posts)The young check out clerks are wearing them, there is one on my face, here and there a few others. This AM at church - 100% masked. All ages. In the Thursday newsletter, Pastor stated his mask was back on, he wasnt mandating it, but as we care for others .. message received pretty loud and clear.

(10,429 posts)mask wearing went from near-100% in the metro area to about 5% in about 2 weeks.
After reinstating it in KCMO, at first it was about 60%, employees a little more than customers. Last week I went to the Whole Foods, 100% masked. Customers and employees.
Yesterday I went to a Price Chopper in Parkville, it was about 50-50 for employees and 80% of the customers were masked.

(15,806 posts)folks were largely masked this morning. I say largely because one lady at the checkout was having words with the front end manager about some customer that was walking around unmasked. She was pissed.
