The entire chapter 23 is antisemitic*.

It's just one of the hundreds of antisemitic passages in the Christian Bible.

*Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2 “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.

5 “Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries[a] wide and the tassels on their garments long; 6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7 they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.

8 “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

Seven Woes on the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees
13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. [14]

15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.

16 “Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’ 17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? 18 You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’ 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. 22 And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.

23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.

25 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.

27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

29 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30 And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Go ahead, then, and complete what your ancestors started!

33 “You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? 34 Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. 35 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.

37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’[c]”

The exact opposite is true, the Jewish Bible talks about treating the stranger with respect and fairness, while the Christian Bible devotes 450 plus passages demonizing Jews. Most of the world's antisemitism can be traced to the Christian Bible, because it spread to Islam and then secular movements like communism. Now it's morphed into antizionism.

According to Muslim beliefs Prophet Muhammad was commanded by the Angel Gabriel to start propheting. So he did and from 610 CE to 632 CE, his revelations were (eventually) written down by some of the literate people who heard them. Sorta like the Christian Gospels but in realtime.

By this point most of the early work of the Christian Councils was completed & their primary text - the Bible - was considered canon, cobbled together from hundreds of other documents that were standardized by agreement of many parties. It existed at that time in at least Greek and Hebrew (OT).

Both religions - Christianity & Islam - borrowed from the Hebrew Tanakh, parts of which date back to maybe 800 BCE.

And that, in turn, borrowed from even earlier origin myths such as the Epic of Gilgamesh, circa 2100 BC.

theory - which suggests associating sex with the left brain increases the need for certainty/fear of uncertainty, that that was advantageous in times of conflict (fear, suspicion, absolutism, intolerance, over cooperation, empathy, curiosity, etc), that that is why humans became 90% right handed over hundreds of thousands of years, and that some populations (especially 'old world' in recent history) selected for those authoritarian tendencies - which may have been written into the ancient texts.

i had told him the koran mandates that "man can only have sex with his wife and that which the right hand possesses" and in terms of sowb theory it revealed the secret of authoritarian power.

the koran scholars interpreted "that which the right hand possesses" to mean slaves and captives, a reward for warriors and wealth.

but for those too poor to have slaves or get married and those who are too young they either are celibate or they masturbate. and if they masturbate that rule gives them an excuse as long as it's with the right hand - what the right hand possesses is fingers, palm, etc. in other words, no masturbating with the left hand - that's bad. and for those who do there's the guilt and the fantasy that when they fight there are dozens of virgins waiting for them in heaven - associating sex with guilt and violence and punishment. that is what wilhelm reich suggested in his 1933 essay "mass psychology of fascism" caused nazism.

i wonder if there are other ancient texts that reveal that secret of authoritarian power. leaving it in any religious text in the form "don't jack off with your left hand or you'll go to hell" would stimulate a lot of unwanted questions. easier to delay the age of reproduction, increase frustration, and repress sex so much that sex education isn't possible.

maybe it's time to point out that the taliban, boko haram, isis, as well as the trumpers, are part of a giant authoritarian masturbation cult.

40. There's a bit more to the left hand - right hand thing...

Eating is done with the right hand. Cleaning up after defecating is done with the left hand.

Theologically, that's because the Devil eats with his left hand. But as I understand it, it's not a sin. Instead, the "messengers" divide tasks by hand & so followers of the religion are encouraged by their deity to do so, too. A sort of, "I gave you this good example to follow". So the rule is along the lines of, "the use of the right hand is intended for noble matters and the use of the left hand is intended for lowly matters. While it is not prohibited (haram) to use the left hand, to do so without a valid need is offensive".

But the underlying original reason is really very simple. These religious rules existed not just as some disconnected religious aspect of people's lives. This was before germ theory and many other tools for understanding the world. In effect, many of these ancient religions functioned as much as health codes, home ec classes, civil law, building codes and other reservoirs of important practical information in a largely non-literate world. It's an effective way to retain useful knowledge within a semi-closed culture over generations.

The Christian Bible, meanwhile, mentions the right hand ~100 times, all in a positive light and the left hand ~25 times, all in a negative way, typically in connection to the Devil. Without the dividing of tasks by hand though, food poisoning & parasites and similar heath issues were probably more likely. But at least they retained the important stuff from the Hebrew source of the Old Testament to ensure people wouldn't wear mix fibers in their clothing, or mix plants in their fields. ::eyeroll::

in on about 90% right handed so it makes sense that would be the 'good' hand and the 'devil' or whatever preceded it would eat with the left.

extending that left is bad right is good duality to everything is seriously problematic, for instance, if you're left handed. i imagine if everyone's supposed to pass the bone with the non-ass wiping hand and the left handed guy keeps insisting on passing it with his ass-wiping hand he wouldn't last long. then it gets turned around in brain hemispheres.

along with and even before this:

many of these ancient religions functioned as much as health codes, home ec classes, civil law, building codes and other reservoirs of important practical information in a largely non-literate world.

would come ecology and biology lessons: don't cut down all those trees... i loved the story about pacific islanders (hawain?) picking the right tree for a canoe - when you thought you found a good one you meditated on it until you saw the flying goddess such and such land on it. if she stayed around and found a bunch worms to pick off it it was no good.

but there's a difference between the functional practicality of promoting one hand or the other and using it to destroy democracy. our brain hemispheres were functionally different even before our animal ancestors became chimps and apes. birds have a similar differentiation, for instance.

by default, decided by millions of years of right handed humans surviving over the possibly less murderous, less authoritarian and conformist left handed human ancestors, most humans still associate sex with the wrong side of the brain.

at some point the 'elders' and scholars may have noticed the left handed young men were less subservient and violent and someone may have figured it out. but if you made it a rule, how do you write it in without creating curiosity? maybe it was in earlier versions of religious writings and taken out knowing that by default there was no need for it and all that was needed was to repress sex and increase frustration, or maybe 'hide' it in plain site like the koran may be doing, and even spice it up with sexual fantasies of dozens of virgins waiting after a violent death.....
