and what we might be able to do about it (good news).I wanted to know if I was eligible for the booster for immunocompromised people. I found I was not, based on the article cited in this thread, posted by fellow-DU-er appalachiablue:

Concerned because the Pfizer vaccine loses effectiveness after six months , I checked my vaccination card to find that my second dose was on April 9, which means that I will be down to 84% effectiveness by Oct. 9.
If you received the Pfizer vaccine, you might want to check that date and count six months from when you received your shot. If we haven't been offered a booster by then, you'll know to be hypervigilant, considering the strength of the Delta variant.
Should those of us with the Pfizer vaccine get a booster shot, the news on that is very good. I would like to caution that this information comes from a small study which has not been peer-reviewed.* Nevertheless, if this holds up in further research, it would be very positive news:

At the same time, a third booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine increases neutralizing antibody levels against the Delta variant by more than 5 times, compared to levels after just a second dose in people ages 18 to 55 years old, new data from Pfizer shows.
The third-dose immune response appears even more robust -- more than 11 times higher than the second shot -- among people 65 to 85 years old.
The company noted this could mean an estimated 100-fold increase in Delta variant protection after a third dose. These new findings are outlined in a Pfizer second-quarter 2021 earnings report, which notes that the data is submitted for publication in a medical journal.

(145,595 posts)He got his first vaccinations back in August of 2020 and just got a booster two weeks ago. He was in the vaccine group for the original trial and he thinks that he got the real booster due to the fact that his arm hurt for four or five days and he ran a fever for the same period

(3,320 posts)Arm hurt BAD.
But no other problems. I feel safer.

(3,320 posts)I'm in that immune-suppressed group that the CDC identified as potentially needing the shot. So I just went to the pharmacy and got another shot.
Kinda illegally, but you know, it's not like REALLY illegal. It's just a few weeks before I could get it legally.
I feel very naughty!
But anyway, it was the same shot (Pfizer) as before.
I have heard that the CDC or whoever Important Authority would know (if they looked) that I've gotten 3 shots, and that thousands of people already have.
But that I'm not in trouble.
I hope.
If I stop posting, you'll know I'm in Vaccine Jail!

(206,072 posts)I got the Moderna since that was the first one available to me, but most of the people I know, including my brother, got the Pfizer. Passing this on!
Bad Thoughts
(2,534 posts)Virologists generally see all vaccines weaken after six months. When this time-line is raised, it is based on their experiences with all vaccines, not based on something specific to Pfizer or Moderna or J&J. A third shot should be welcome, but there's no need to be skeptical over the effectiveness of these new vaccines.

(35,745 posts)but it will be interesting to see if any studies come out showing the Moderna's effectiveness also declines a bit, based on what you said.
Some of us want to do the best we can at avoiding this horrible disease: that's me. I would do anything to avoid it.
I absolutely cannot fathom failing to take advantage of a shot that would make one's life so much easier, healthier, and financially viable.

(18,402 posts)Has longer efficacy than Pfizer. Theyve released no details, and no study has been published in a medical journal.
Only Pfizer has released data on its length of efficacy.

(35,745 posts)then we should all bear in mind what Bad Thoughts posted upthread, post #3.
Also, I edited my post to take out the reference to Moderna. Thanks for the input.
