China already has invested in some projects. It will be interesting to see what China does . We know they don't care about human rights issues but maybe they might be able to prevent the country from being a training ground for other islamic terrorists .
China is ready to deepen "friendly and cooperative" relations with Afghanistan, a government spokeswoman said Monday, after the Taliban seized control of the country.
China shares a rugged 76-kilometre (47-mile) border with Afghanistan.
Beijing has long feared Afghanistan could become a staging point for minority Uyghur separatists in the sensitive border region of Xinjiang.
But a top-level Taliban delegation met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Tianjin last month, promising that Afghanistan would not be used as a base for militants.
In exchange, China offered economic support and investment for Afghanistan's reconstruction.
"The Taliban have repeatedly expressed their hope to develop good relations with China, and that they look forward to China's participation in the reconstruction and development of Afghanistan," foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters.

(47,014 posts)So there should be no problem there.
China wants Afghan rare earth minerals, a secure country for their Belt and Road initiative, and a regional power presence.
In return China will invest and build Afghanistan infrastructure. And give the Taliban respect, legitimacy and status. It will be a transactional relationship. China will expect and receive a return on their investment.
China cannot become a superpower unless it can become a regional power first. China has a lot at stake.
I seriously doubt China will follow the American strategy of waging prolonged aggressive combat, trying to force a political system upon a reluctant country. All at significant cost.

(8,678 posts)China might be only super power capable of working with the Taliban effectively. For sure this will have nothing to do with improving human rights. It will be all about developing the vast mineral resources and making money but at this point it helps.

(89,248 posts)I was looking at the terrain between China and Afghanistan and there is this little corridor in the northeast which is basically a mountain pass that goes into China directly. Looks like a good place for a pipeline and a big road. That could bypass Pakistan and go to a water route from there. There are probably resource based issues we aren't hearing much, if anything, about.

(86,577 posts)Is the geographic/topographic path of least resistance to the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman depending on where they come out, involves both countries. The most logical route as it by-passes mountains along most of the route and would make sense for pipeline or some infrastructure feature.

(2,030 posts)The prevalence of torture and the lengths to which the Chinese government has gone to cover up its treatment of Muslim minorities are described in comprehensive detail in an Amnesty International report on detention camps in Western China.
Every former camp detainee Amnesty interviewed in the report recounted cruel and degrading treatment, including torture. The report, released Thursday, is based on interviews with 108 people, including 55 camp survivors and several government cadres who worked in the camps.
As part of an attempt to hide camp conditions from the world, Chinese officials created a massive, nearly week-long bonfire, burning as many documents as could be found from an office overseeing the camps, according to an ex-cadre who spoke to Amnesty and whose identity has been concealed for his safety.

Maybe China is willing to overlook their radical Islamic inclinations in order to gain more power over a country they share a border with. Plus, now they'll have a handy supply of terrorists at their disposal.

(89,248 posts)nukes . It's also meant as a strategy to hold off India.
If it was just about cultural closeness then then India and China would be allies even with the political differences.
They invest in places because of how they could benefit economically , not because they like/don't like the people .

(9,117 posts)We dont know how much al Qaeda is going to influence the Talibans foreign policy, and whether the Taliban will once again host al Aaeda training camps.
If the Taliban does resume hosting al Qaeda training camps and al Qaeda starts hitting Chinese targets, I expect that the Chinese/Taliban honeymoon will come to a screeching halt.

There is a bad side also with some guys just wanting the women for sex but they promise or make them think it's a committed relationship with plans to marry. And there are now some half Chinese babies with young single women left to care for them without any support.
