I've been posting about my friend and his husband who are currently both seriously ill.
I learned yesterday that my husband's boss and his wife are also both seriously ill with COVID.
I start teaching next week with 5 different classes each with 24 students. (We reduced our class sizes from 32).
That's 120 additional exposures per day.
But for some reason we can't require vaccines.

(27,118 posts)His husband is only slightly less worse off.
The boss and his wife report that they can barely make it to the bathroom and back, otherwise they are in bed.
To me, that's serious.

(27,118 posts)So I'm assuming (maybe erroneously) that they are getting the best advice possible.
The boss and his wife don't concern me as much, just because I know both of them are very particular about their health and will probably pursue any available treatment.

(36,221 posts)Recline for hours at a time. I thought laying in bed could possibly make me get pneumonia. Also I drank a lot. But I also spent a lot of time in the bathroom. Uggg. I do not want it ever again.

(7,849 posts)the nice pharmacist advised me to stay masked..he said most of the break through infections are relatively mild with few symptoms...but what is considered relatively mild in a 40 year old is very different in a 73 year old with compromised immune system..

(44,973 posts)Are masks going to be required for students?
By the way our Governor actually signed an order forbidding coivd vaccine mandates by public schools and universities until it's fully approved by FDA.

(12,412 posts)got sick with "the flu", stayed home infecting everyone around them, and then had serious heart/liver/lung issues that put them in the hospital. When told they had CoVid that caused the illness, they still remained in denial along with their infected loved ones.
Medical personnel are getting righteously pissed off. One, my step sons sister is not going to make it.

(27,811 posts)Maybe there aren't enough stats, but I would like more breakdown. Which vaccine? Underlying conditions? Vaccination rate.where they live?. Attended large indoor events?
I am vaccinated and being as careful as I ever have been, but I would really like more information on tbe breakthrough cases (someone my partner was working with at a clinic is vaxed and got Covid,, but admitted she went to a karaoke event in her red area of the state).

(27,118 posts)Underlying conditions for my friend is that he is overweight and has had sinus issues all his life. The vaccination rate where we live is slightly less than the national average. He is pretty sure he knows where he caught it: He's a flight attendant and there was a sick little girl on one of his flights.
His husband has no underlying issues that I know of.
As for the boss and his wife: They have no underlying conditions. Same vaccination rate. I don't have access to their social calendar, but I do know that they are very sociable people and (pre-COVID at least) almost are always out doing stuff with friends and having friends over to their house. I know that they had cut down, at least, when everything was shut down. I think they had gone back to normal behavior around May or so, though.
This is all coming from mostly red AZ.

(7,410 posts)5 of the 7 are vaccinated. All 5 said the symptoms were almost nothing, like a mild cold for a few days. The two unvaccinated folks had a rough time, one was in the hospital multiple times and the other said it was bad flu symptoms for him.

(26,071 posts)Fully vaxxed with Moderna for a months. We literally just thought it was allergies and a possible sinus infection, but were paranoid and got a test done that Saturday. Positive. Perfectly fine the next day.
We are always masked, but we had some more staff start coming in at work who are not masked or vaxxed, so...

(7,410 posts)Chances are some of us other vaxxed folks have been exposed and infected but we just never knew it. I always have a slightly runny nose with my grass allergies and recently had an ear infection, I could have mild symptoms and not even notice.
We have masks available at work to wear inside but with them just being the cheap surgical masks that don't fight tight with the air just flowing around the mask through the gaps and with Delta being so much contagious through the air I doubt they protect or prevent much working inside close to someone.
If they provided us N95 masks that were fitted well it might provide some degree of protection but that's cost prohibitive, especially if I had to buy my own and wear a new one every shift to make it effective.

(34,069 posts)I just got done teaching 35 students for 4 days x 6 hours, and 93 students for 4 days x 6 hours. Two had to leave because of COVID symptoms (one tested negative, the other may - or may not - get tested).
One of my fully vaccinated coworkers had a "cold," but fortunately is a rule-follower. She reported, as directed, and was told to stay home until she got a negative test. She tested positive. She would have been teaching in my class on Friday and Sunday, but for being a rule follower since she truly did not believe it was COVID.
At least masks are now required. Now . . . if I can only get my coworkers to follow the rules (he's told his local volunteers who help to run the programs that masks are required **wink-wink** I have yet to see any of them wearing masks. We are not permitted to require vaccination - or to ask about vaccination status.
