this country is. I say this as a Bernie Sander's supporter that this was the best move of Biden's presidency so far. He did the right thing and I think deep down everybody on both sides knows it was the right move.
I'm pretty sure the majority of Republicans support getting out of Afghanistan but they disagree with leaving now simply because it wasn't a republican president that was in charge of the exit. If this was Trump they would be screaming about how he did a great job of leading the country out of Afghanistan.
What a really comes down to is that even if you make the universally popular move it is still unpopular in this country politically due to not being on the same team as the other party.

(19,253 posts)In a few weeks that will be forgotten. The Taliban is keeping up their end of the deal we made with them so far and the US is getting their people out without interference. The next several days will see us get out everyone we wanted to get out, without violence.
Biden is going to say we planned for this, and he's right, if we didn't have a plan in place for this contingency (Kabul falling quickly) our troops would be fighting right now.
In the end, all this will be is that we left a couple weeks sooner than we thought we were going to.
The Taliban is a brutal regime, don't get me wrong, but they're holding up their end so far.

(4,835 posts)We would look like we dont honor agreements across administrations if he hadnt withdrawn the troops.
In the press they keep talking about how disastrous this is. Like Vietnam.
Vietnam is actually doing pretty well for themselves. Anthony Bourdain really liked going there. They have a fast growing, healthy economy if one can believe what they read on the internet.
If Dubya hadnt slept during the PDB, we wouldnt have been there in the first place.
Its time for the administration to scrutinize the press and the military industrial complex being bedfellows and break up some monopolies based on the coverage Im seeing.
Youre absolutely right, everyone will forget about this in a couple of weeks. It was wise for Biden to do this early in the admin.

(578 posts)of politics. I would say if Biden found the cure for cancer then the Republicans would be hellbent on finding a way to destroy the cure as soon as possible.
