"We will fight to the last American!"

Paraphrasing a joke I heard many years ago about a mythical and humorous Winston Churchill speech:

"We will fight to the last American!"

The same could be said to the critics of President Biden's decision to withdraw from Afghanistan.

The big difference of course is that the Brits fought mightily for their country and cause. The Afghans never even broke a sweat for their country and cause.

Nonetheless, for most of the region stretching from Ethiopia to Pakistan the notion of a "country" is not what most Westerners would understand. Far too many people in that region are very clannish and are far more loyal to their tribal or ethic group than to a nation or central government.

Nation building is impossible where people do not see themselves as a nation.
