I had no idea there were apparently two different Presidential addresses being simultaneously broadcast this afternoon---until I heard Jake Tapper and his panel comment on the speech THEY heard.
Theirs did not feature President Biden taking responsibility for the chaotic scenes we're seeing on TV. Mine had Joe admitting that the Taliban takeover had taken place much quicker than he anticipated and said---QUOTE: "I'm the President of the United States. The buck stops here!"
Theirs did not explain how or why this mess occurred. Mine did explain that the Afghanistan leaders and military did zilch to prepare for this possibility despite being urged, by Joe---twice---to do so AND that many of the allies we are now scuffling to rescue resisted our effort to evacuate them months ago.
Theirs was apparently a weak and vague attempt to excuse a failure. Mine was a blockbuster of a speech by a President who specifically said his decision was right for our country and he "absolutely" stood by it.
Finally, I thought one of Joe's best lines was when he asked (paraphrase) "How many more generations of American men and women would you have me send to risk their lives in a civil war the Afghanis would not fight themselves?" I guess "their" speech did not include that question because they did not even attempt to answer it.
Which speech did you hear?

(56 posts)his failed and embarrassing attempts to imitate a young Dan Rather. He has too little self-awareness to know that half his viewers see him as a grandstanding fool. The other half views him to be looking for other work before long because so many of us mute him or change the channel.
Besides, he is way too old to pull off the Rather impersonation.

(54,770 posts)What I hope is that we did not hear a lot of kicking ass, and maybe some self-criticism, for whatever caused the optics this week.
In my view, the President never should have said this wont be Saigon and well stand behind Afghans.

They have no skin in the game and don't give a shit. Simple as that. They make me want to vomit.

(3,240 posts)The speech they told about was from a weak stumbling person who was making excuses and reading a speech someone else had written for them on a teleprompter.
I never heard Biden stumble or sound weak at all. I heard a strong leader acting presidential.

(8,727 posts)Sure is strange now seeing all the right/white wing talking heads demanding we send troops to put their lives on the line to protect Muslim women and children. Cant remember Andrea Mitchell so heartbroken about our border refugees fleeing death. Not long ago their Messiah demanded Muslims not be allowed in MurKKKa and were burning mosques here. Now they are outraged at how women and children are being raped and murdered. (Nothing like those fleeing to our southern border from religious drug cartel lunatics, their hearts sure bled for them) Wait until they hear we may be bringing those Muslim women and children here, the families of the interpreters. We will see just how much their new found humanitarian concerns are for real.
Red hat heads will explode. Bidens fought of course.

(2,018 posts)They have been spoiled with 4 years of insane corruption at governments highest levels, 4 years of social upheaval driven by the insane rhetoric of the past administration, 4 years of the collapse of a major political party into the darkness of fascism. All driving their ratings consistently higher than they've probably ever been. Hence the first chance they get to fan the faux flames of controversy towards the current administration they pounce in a desperate attempt relive the heyday of the past 4 years. I find it utterly disgusting.
I heard the speech you did. This is the reason the 4 former presidents didn't do this, it was going to be a complete mess no matter what. Somebody had to have the cahonees to do it and take the heat. A large majority of voters, left-right-middle, have been wanting this for a decade. It sucks, its tragic, its ugly but it had to be done, shoulda been done years ago period.

(13,582 posts)President Biden said exactly what 95% of Americans have been thinking for at least the last decade or more. No matter how hard the talking heads try to sell it, we all know this stinky cheese is well past its expiration date.

(778 posts)Except you summarized it much more eloquently than I would have. I like how he started his speech with a bit of the history lesson of how we got there and what our objectives were. I like how he admitted they did move in faster than expected, but he stands by his decision in order to save American lives that would have been lost fighting a battle to save Afghanistan while their own trained and armed soldiers had no interest in defending it themselves.
