I am old enough to remember the Soviet-Afghan War

I recall how many Americans were amused at the Soviet incursion and quickly deemed it "Russia's Vietnam." We not only were aware of Afghani history but purposefully poured kerosene on the fire.

But then we turn around do something similar a couple of decades later.

The difference was today I didn't see ANY women (or men) handing babies to soldiers. Men were trying to flee while their women and children were being slaughtered at home. The last plane out should have leveled that airport.
