A 27-year-old female mayor in Afghanistan says the Taliban 'will come for people like me and kill me

A prominent female mayor and women's rights advocate in Afghanistan said the Taliban "will come for people like me and kill me" as the militant Islamist group retook control of the country.

Zarifa Ghafari, 27, leads the city of Maidan Sharh. She is Afghanistan's youngest mayor, became the first female mayor of the Maidan Wardak province in 2018, and has championed women's rights in Afghanistan for years, hosting her own radio show and founding a nongovernmental organization focused on empowering women economically.

"I'm sitting here waiting for them to come," Ghafari told the UK's iNews of the Taliban. "There is no one to help me or my family. I'm just sitting with them and my husband.

"And they will come for people like me and kill me. I can't leave my family. And anyway, where would I go?"

they have to drive the women everwhere and continually chaperone them ,much more complicated and less freedom for them too.

Nancy- Governor Whitmer- AOC - Gabby Gifford- those murderous assaults happen right here to women in power - not to diminish what happens to Afghani women - but women in power are threatened - this crap has to stop in the USA and every where

it has (way, way, way less frequently) happened here as mentioned.

(and may it never happen here at that level. May it decrease to 0 threats against women politians.)

There are shades here of being a Jew in Europe in the late 30's, and even that's not a fair comparison because the Nazis didn't do what they did until they did it, so it was possible for many Jews to rationalize away the looming threat as something that would pass.

The Taliban already controlled Afghanistan once. Everyone in that country knows what they're about, and everyone there for the past decade has known they would immediately return to power as soon as the US left.

I mean, honestly, anyone who wasn't down with the Taliban had at least 10 years to start preparing themselves, both physically and psychologically, for the need to leave the country and claim refugee status. That's a terrible choice, but it's better than being kidnapped and murdered, and at least they had time to plan.

The unavoidable subtext to all this is that many Afghans just assumed the US would take care of them in perpetuity.

I just checked and found this.

Zarifa Ghafari, one of Afghanistan's first female mayors who earlier this month said she was waiting for the Taliban to kill her, has made it to safety in Germany but is already imagining her return to her country. The 29-year-old former mayor of Maidan Shar describes the pain she felt after her father, a senior member of the Afghan military, was gunned down outside his home in Kabul last year, allegedly by the Taliban. Leaving Afghanistan, she tells the BBC, "was more painful than losing my dad."

I'm sure she most certainly have been killed.
