There was another "suicide by cop" in Milwaukee...

I noticed this part of the story:

Family members at the scene same he had a history of mental illness.

They questioned why officers were so quick to fatally shoot him.

Because he was waving his gun at people and shot at the cops, nitwit!

There are times when people are so off their nut that there is no choice by cops.

"Suicide by cop" implies some kind of choice. If he was suffering from schizophrenia, that's WhiskeyGrinder Aug 2021 #2

malcolm gladwell (somewhere on his podcast - if anyone wants to listen, I'd be happy to dig it up).

But there has actually been research on whether someone can react after someone makes a threatening movement (apparently with a weapon.

If the officer doesn't react first (prior to the drop of the arm or what-have-you) - they could die. It's not possible to react after the other person takes a threatening movement.

(Hope I've explained that well. But there is actual science to this).

I know people always hope for a better outcome - and often blame the police. Sometimes, I'm absolutely sure, they do the wrong thing. But I wish some of the science behind policing was better understood by the public. They actually have done a lot of research on these situations.

(And more is needed, btw! But that specific situation - the intervention would have to happen prior to the confrontation. Because officers in those specific situations have been taught the science behind action/reaction).

arguable.

No, but there is a choice by society how we approach people in crisis.

He had a gun.

Where he got the gun in the first place is anyone's guess, my own guess is that he stole it from another family member.

And he did shoot at the cops.

I'm just grateful no one else was shot by this guy in his delusions.

There could have been better outcomes, in an ideal situation.
But this whole incident was hardly ideal.

Saying "There are times when people are so off their nut that there is no choice by cops" makes it sound like those ideal situations are impossible.

Other times they are not.

This time there really was no choice by the cops.
