(9,160 posts)How Twitter determines what's trending is a strange little algorithm.
If you look at a list of what's trending now in the US, you'll see a lot of those topics have under 10,000 tweets.
The algorithm just highlights what's new that day for the most part or tries to determine what might be going viral. You'll notice it's often some niche bit of nothing that a segment of people are on about at the moment.
I doubt under 10k Twitter users are discussing Afghanistan.

(9,160 posts)I think it's toxic and makes people actively dumber. It reduces complex subjects to brief hot takes. It is still weird to me that "journalists" spend all day on the thing getting into slap fights with each other. It's digital high school.
If it makes you feel better, I popped open the Twitter app on my phone to check after reading your post. On the front page under "What's Happening," six of the top eight were about Afghanistan.
