(297,196 posts)One year ago, the Donald released 5000 Taliban fighters in exchange for a cease-fire to help his flailing presidential campaign, despite strenuous objections from both the Pentagon and the Afghan government. President Ashraf Ghani warned that their release would be a
"danger to the world."

Worse, the Taliban leader who is set to
taking over Afghanistan, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, has Trump to thank for his release:
The disaster unfolding in Afghanistan came from the deal that Trump made a year ago, except he wanted it to happen soonerby Christmas of last year. He postponed it after his loss for Biden to deal with it in May. The Pentagon asked for more time, so Biden pushed it to the end of August. This enraged conservatives for delaying the withdrawal.
Keep in mind that Donald J. Trump invited the Taliban to Camp David the week of September 11 to strike what was essentially a surrender deal, but cancelled after the obvious backlash of hosting the Taliban on 9/11. Instead, he sent Pompeo to Qatar to sign the deal with the Taliban, and announced that he had given the Taliban everything they asked for because "everyone is tired of war."

Lets begin with the elephant in the room. There is no meaningful argument that the fate of Afghanistan is somehow irrelevant to our national security. The War in Afghanistan was no war of choice. On 9/11 our nation suffered its worst attack since Pearl Harbor. It suffered its worst attack on an American city since the British burned Washington D.C. on August 24, 1814, and the Taliban were intimately involved. That attack came from an enemy operating with the permission and under the protection of the same Taliban the Trump administration deals with today.
It is true that the conflict in Afghanistan has been long (19 years), deadly (more than 2,400 Americans have lost their lives), and frustrating. It is true that Americans want it to end. And a true peace deal would bring welcome relief not just to the United States, but also to an Afghan nation that has seen indescribable pain and suffering. But there is no hope for peace when your opponent intends to continue the fight, and the hope for peace diminishes further still when the proposed peace agreement diminishes allies and strengthens your enemies.
If you read the peace agreement itself, youll note immediately that it gives the Taliban a series of concrete, measurable gifts. First, theres an immediate allied withdrawal down to 8,600 American troops (and proportionate numbers of allied troops) within 135 days. The remainder of American and allied forces will leave within 14 months.
At the same time, the United States will immediately and substantially reinforce the Taliban by seeking the release of 5,000 Taliban prisoners by March 20. Even worse, the United States further agreed to a goal of releasing all remaining prisoners over the course of the subsequent three months. It will do this at the same time that it commits to the goal of removing sanctions from members of the Taliban that include travel bans, asset freezes, and an arms embargo.

(297,196 posts)let the Prisoners out of prison & didn't even include any Afghan people.
Now they've taken over & people are rightfully scared for their lives.
They can thank trump for that.

(297,196 posts)Trump even had private discussions with the top Taliban leader, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar. I could only imagine what was said and promised. Not only did Trump cave to the Taliban by giving them everything they asked for, but no members of the Afghan government were present. None. Trump completely cut them out of the deal.
Former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Ryan Crocker, who was appointed under George W. Bush, blames Trump's "peace" deal with what is happening now because Trump would only work with the Taliban and completely delegitimized the Afghan government.

(58,785 posts)how we were doing and what we could achieve in Afghanistan. Even if it was somehow possible for an invading western Christian nation to take over and remake medievalish Islamic Afghanistan into what we needed, America was completely unwilling to do what it would take.
American commanders served up public displays of optimism so unwarranted and baseless that their statements amounted to a disinformation campaign,...
Since tRump's obliging "peace surrender" in 2020, the Taliban of course responded by stepping up their violence and takeover of territory. tRump's ex- Sec Def Mark Esper yesterday tried to distance his own involvement by accusing him of "undermining" his own agreement. Reality, with Esper at his side, tRump, as always, eagerly gave away America's position and power to the strongmen he admired.
