Spike in traffic to DC tunnel website caused operator to contact FBI before Jan. 6

A spike in traffic to Washington, D.C.-based website on tunnels and other underground infrastructure caused an operator to call the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) before the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol, CNBC reported.

Elliot Carter told NBC News affiliate WRC that he suspected unusual activity from his website "WashingtonTunnels.com" on New Year's Day. The website details and curates obscure underground tunnels and pipe systems in the D.C. area.

Carter told CNBC that the traffic came from visitors across the nation, with most of it coming from hyperlinks from anonymous messages boards with some using the name of former President Trump.

"These people were suddenly obsessed with the Capitol building," Carter told WRC.
